Preparation of poly(vinylalcohol)/poly(acrylamide-co-vinyl imidazole)/γ-Fe2O3semi-IPN nanocomposite and their application for removal of heavy metal ions from water

Abstract: A series of magnetic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels was prepared in one-stage strategy composed of linear poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains and magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles entrapped within the cross-linked poly(acrylamide-co-vinylimidazole) (poly(AAm-co-VI)) network. The influence of PVA, weight ratio of AAm:VI, γ-Fe 2 O 3 , and MBA on the swelling properties of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogels was evaluated. The prepared magnetic semi-IPN hydrogels were fully characterized… Show more

“…The most effective adsorbents for adsorption process are functionalized polymeric materials because metal ions can be chemically bonded by the functional groups of the polymer . These kinds of materials often present the best properties of each of its components in a synergic way and have high performances of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties . In the functionalized polymeric materials, aromatic polyamides (PAs) are well known as high‐performance polymers because of their combination of excellent thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties that make them useful in applications for advanced technologies .…”

“…Magnetic separation is one of the promising methods for an environmental purification technique, and hence, the incorporation of magnetic iron oxide leads to adsorbents with the capability to be separated from the mixture using magnetic forces. In this way, several polymer matrices including synthetic and biopolymers have included magnetic iron oxide for the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) (Zhou et al, 2009 ; Monier et al, 2010 ; Fan et al, 2013 ; Sekhavat Pour and Ghaemy, 2016 ). Oxyanion contaminants such as arsenate, arsenite, chromate, and vanadate, among others, adsorb onto metal (hydr)oxide surfaces forming stable monodentate or bidentate inner-sphere complexes via ligand exchange with OH − or OH 2 groups (Hristovski and Markovski, 2017 ).…”

“…Batch adsorption experiments showed that low‐cost hydrogel adsorbents can adsorb effectively heavy metal ions. [ 30 ] Wang et al prepared novel semi‐IPN hydrogels via a one‐step in situ approach from chitosan, acrylic acid, gelatin, and a crosslinker. Their adsorption properties were explored using Cu 2+ as a model ion.…”
