Preparation and Energy Storage Properties of a Lauric acid/Octadecanol Eutectic Mixture

Abstract: A phase change material (PCM) has the characteristics of latent heat storage, controllable phase transition temperature (PTT), and chemical stability. It can naturally regulate the ambient temperature in a certain range and reduce the load of air conditioning operation. Therefore, it plays an important role in the field of energy-saving buildings, and the PTT of PCM is one of the decisive factors. In this paper, through analyzing PCM installed in solar buildings at various regions, a binary eutectic mixture (E… Show more

“…Using the 2-hydroxyethylammonium [HEA]Pal, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium [DHEA]Pal, and tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium palmitate [THEA] Pal ILs as a base, we describe a unique PCM here. Peaks at approximately 1075 cm −1 are used to represent the anti-symmetric stretching vibration peaks of CH 3 , where they appear as two faint peaks 39 . In all ILs, there is a peak that corresponds to N-H at about 3359-3384 cm −1 .…”

“…As a general tendency, supported fatty acids are more thermally stable than free molecules [ 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 ]. In addition, saturated and short chain fatty acid are the most stable below 300 °C, resulting in a decrease in thermal stability in the following sequence: lauric acid ˃ palmitic acid ˃ oleic acid [ 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 ]. Similar TPD patterns were achieved after repeated desorption–wet CO 2 re-saturation cycles, providing clear evidence of the thermal stability of the investigated samples within the range of 20–120 °C, with a consecutive stepwise thermal desorption (STD) at a constant temperature of 120 °C for 20 min.…”

“…According to the second law of thermodynamics and the theory of phase equilibrium [33,34], the best molar ratio and the minimum crystallization temperature of the binary composite PCMs can be obtained by Schroeder's formula (1).…”

“…Because fatty acids and fatty alcohols mainly come from the natural animal fat and vegetable oil, they have compared with paraffin lower flammability and better biodegradability [17,33]. The compounded binary composite PCM of fatty acids and fatty alcohols has good thermal stability, chemical compatibility and long-term cycling reliability, and can be a low energy consumption thermal energy storage (TES) material [34,35]. To obtain a PCMs that is more suitable for use in the built environment, the phase transition temperature (PTT) must be suitable, e.g.…”
