Preparation and Characterization of Di-μ-oxo Dimanganese(IV) Complexes with Bidentate Schiff Bases, N-Alkyl-salicylideneamine

Abstract: Novel di-μ-oxo dimanganese(IV) complexes, [MnIV(N-R-sal)2(μ-O)]2, with bidentate Schiff base ligands, N-alkyl-salicylideneamine, N-R-salH (R = n-C3H7 (Pr), n-C4H9 (Bu), n-C6H13 (Hx), n-C8H17 (Oct), n-C12H25 (Dod), or n-C18H37 (Octd)), have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopies, magnetic susceptibilities, thermal analysis and X-ray crystallography.

“…Rhenium complexes incorporating tetradentate bis(salicylideneamine) ligands, salenes, have been known for some time and have been developed primarily as catalysts for oxygen atom transfer reactions. The cationic oxorhenium oxazoline complex [Re(O)(hoz) 2 (CH 3 CN)][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ] ( 1 ) was recently employed by our group for the dehydrogenative oxidation of organosilanes and hydrosilation of aldehydes and ketones . Struck by the similarity of the oxazoline ligand in 1 to commonly employed salen ligands, we attempted to synthesize oxorhenium salen complexes that could similarly be used for hydrosilation reactions and other metal-catalyzed reductions.…”

“…This can also be used in radiotherapy [7] as a nucleide with its isotopes 186 Re and 188 Re which emit b radiation. Tetradentate bis(salicylidenamine) Rhenium compounds were also developed for catalytic applications like transfer reactions of oxygen atom [3,[8][9][10][11]. Recently, Schiff-base manganese complexes were used to obtain polynuclear molecules [12] and one-dimensional compounds which present a slow relaxation of the magnetization [13,14].…”
