Reaction of (Bu4N)[ReOCl4] with the tetradentate Schiff base ligand α, α’-[(1,1-dimethylethylene)dinitrilo]di-o-cresol (sal2ibnH2) yields cis-[ReVOCl(sal2ibn)], which quickly forms trans-[μ-O(ReVO(sal2ibn))2] in solution. The dinuclear complex can also be isolated by the addition of base (Et3N) to the reaction mixture. Conversely, the mononuclear complex can be trapped as cis-[ReVO(NCS)(sal2ibn)] by addition of (Bu4N)SCN to the reaction mixture. Reduction of cis-[ReVO(NCS)sal2ibn] with triphenylphosphine gives the unique trans-[ReIII(NCS)(PPh3)(sal2ibn)] and rare μ-oxo Re(IV) dimer trans-[μ-O(ReIV(NCS)(sal2ibn))2]. All of the complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), cyclic voltammetry and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Source of material (2E)-2-(6-(E-(2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl)pyridine-2-yl)-methyleneaminophenol was reacted with Re(CO) 5 Cl in amixture of toluene anddichloromethane.Crystals suitablefor the diffraction study were obtainedupon evaporation of the reaction mixtureatambientconditions. Experimental detailsCarbon-boundHatoms were placed in calculated positions(C-H 0.95 Å) andwereincludedinthe refinement in the riding model approximation, with U iso (H) setto1.2U eq (C). The Hatoms of the hydroxylgroups were allowed to rotate with afixed angle around the C-O bonds to best fit the experimental electron density (HFIX 147 in the SHELX program suite [14]), with U iso (H) sett o 1.5U eq (O). The octahedral coordination sphere is constructed by three carbonyl ligands in fac-configuration, as well as ac hlorido ligand and asymmetric two-fold Schiff-base, the latter coordinating via the pyridyl-type nitrogen atom as well as one of the imine-group nitrogen atoms. Synthesis of Cationic Oxorhenium Salen Complexes via μ-Oxo Abstraction and Their Activity in Catalytic Reductions

Abstract: Cationic oxorhenium salen complexes are prepared by the abstraction of bridging oxo ligands with [Et3Si][B(C6F5)4] and [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]. These complexes catalyze the reduction of 2-butanone with Et3SiH under ambient conditions.
