Preparation and Applications of the Cellulose Nanocrystal

Abstract: Cellulose widely existed in plants and bacteria, which takes important effect on the synthesis of macromolecule polymer material. Because of its great material properties, the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) showed its necessary prospect in various industrial applications. As a renewable future material, the preparation methods of the CNC were reviewed in this paper. Meanwhile, the important applications of CNC in the field of composites, barrier film, electronics, and energy consumption were also mentioned with b… Show more

“…Due to excellent surface and structural properties, cellulose is being researched extensively for various applications such as food, chemicals, textile, biomaterials, electronics, electrochemical devices, and pharmaceuticals, etc. [1] , [2] . Cellulose has been further classified into Cellulose microcrystals (CMCs), Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) according to its morphology and structural characteristics.…”

“…The TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TONC) has been prepared using the TEMPO/NaBr/NaOCl system followed by ultrasonic treatment. This treatment leads to the selective removal of the amorphous regions of cellulose while maintaining the crystalline regions of cellulose macromolecules [14]. The method of preparing of the TONС was described in [15].…”

“…CNC was prepared by acid-hydrolysis (using 64% by weight H 2 SO 4 ) of the MCC. [29][30][31] The time of hydrolysis was vital to obtain the appropriate properties of the prepared CNC as longer hydrolysis time rendered the breaking of coarse aggregates in the CNC's cellulose matrix leading to larger axial ratios, which is conducive to transparency. [26,32] In a typical experiment, 50 g of MCC was mixed with 50 mL of deionized distilled water and subjected to dropwise addition of 500 mL of 64% by weight H 2 SO 4 for a hydrolysis time of 45 min.…”
