Preliminary Clinical Study Using a Novel Wound Dressing Composed of Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen Containing EGF

Abstract: This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel wound dressing composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen (Col) containing epidermal growth factor (EGF), referred to as EGF-wound dressing. EGF-wound dressing was prepared by freeze-drying a mixed aqueous solution of high-molecular-weight HA, low-molecular-weight HA and heat-denatured Col containing EGF. EGF-wound dressing was applied to skin defects, such as intractable skin ulcers, burn ulcers, traumatic skin defects and skin donor-… Show more

“…High molecular weight HA is useful to create an excellent wound healing environment, while low molecular weight HA is useful to promote angiogenesis. Both side of spongy sheet was irradiated with an ultraviolet lamp in order to induce intermolecular cross-linking among Col molecules [24][25][26]. This wound dressing (5 cm × 8 cm) contains EGF at a concentration of 2.0 μg/cm 2 .…”

“…This CDS can release various types of growth factors even after cryopreserving and thawing process. As the second research strategy, we developed a functional wound dressing that is composed of a spongy sheet of HA and Col containing epidermal growth factor (EGF) [24][25][26]. EGF is able to facilitate both keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation.…”

“…Considering these efficacies of EGF and VC, we developed a functional wound dressing composed of HA and Col containing EGF [11]- [14]. This EGF-incorporating wound dressing showed the potential to facilitate granulating tissue formation associated with angiogenesis, and to accelerate epithelialization in rats and diabetic mice.…”

“…This treatment using EGF-wound dressing was applied repeatedly at an interval of 3 to 5 days for a period of 6 weeks, or longer if necessary. Excellent and good results were assessed in 93.7% of the all cases in total clinical evaluation [19].…”

“…This freeze-dried wound dressing is very practical for the treatment of burn injury. The clinical study showed that EGF-incorporating wound dressing is a practical product [19]. Based on the design concept of EGFincorporating wound dressing, we developed EGF-incorporating anti-adhesive product [20].…”
