Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A and asthma

Abstract: Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) is potentially a proatherosclerotic metalloproteinase and a new inflammatory marker. Investigators sought to evaluate the significance of PAPP-A in patients with asthma. Blood samples were collected from 35 patients and 20 control subjects. Serum PAPP-A was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PAPP-A levels of patients with asthma (8.1+/-5.0 mU/L) were higher than those of the control group (4.9+/-2.1 mU/L) (P<.01). A significant correlation was noted … Show more

“…Conversely, PAPP-A was associated with increased mortality in type 1 diabetic patients with nephropathy but only in unadjusted analysis; after adjustment for traditional risk factors the prognostic value of PAPP-A was no longer signifi cant (14) . PAPP-A was signifi cantly elevated in allergic rhinitis (15) and in asthma and correlated with asthma severity (16) . In children there was no difference between obese and lean subjects but a correlation with other cardiovascular risk factors was found (17) .…”

“…In our previous study, we showed that the serum PAPP-A level is increased in asthma patients and is positively correlated with the severity of asthma. 25 In our current study group, 14 allergic rhinitis patients had concomitant asthma, but the PAPP-A level was not significantly different between allergic rhinitis patients with and without asthma. We divided the turbinate hypertrophy group into two subgroups according to the presence of asthma and found no significant difference in the PAPP-A level between these two subgroups.…”

Decreased PAPP‐A levels are related with not only fetal anomalies but also with grave pregnancy outcomes such as intrauterine growth retardation, preeclampsia, fetal demise, and preterm delivery .…”
