Background: The unprecedented nationwide outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavarius (MERS-CoV) from June to July in 2015 took the Korean healthcare system unexpectedly and created physical and psychological stress and trauma to Registered Nurses unprepared to deal with the viral outbreak. Purpose: We investigated the effects of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout among Korean registered nurses (RNs). Methods: A descriptive cross sectional design using a self-administered survey of a convenience sample of 112 Korean RNs. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised-Korean version (IES-R-K) for PTSD and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) for burnout were utilized. Results: Overall prevalence for symptoms of PTSD was 50.0%. PTSD was significantly correlated to burnout (r = .480, p = .000), especially two burnout subscales, emotional exhaustion (r = .533, p = .000), and depersonalization (r = .497, p = .000). Conclusions: Future anticipatory guidance and management of traumatic outbreak or disaster should be considered for nurses' mental health. Public health and safety at the national level must address quality health outcomes for both patients and healthcare professionals alike.

Nº 47 Julio 2017Página 400 ORIGINALES Engagement o compromiso en profesionales de enfermería: variables socio-demográficas y laborales asociadasEngagement or commitment in nurses: sociodemographic and labor variables associated RESUMEN:Objetivos: Determinar el nivel de engagement y la relación con las seis áreas de la vida laboral en los profesionales de enfermería en la ciudad de Huesca (España) y su asociación con las variables sociodemográficas y laborales. Materiales y Método: Estudio descriptivo, transversal, con abordaje cuantitativo, en el que participaron 305 profesionales de enfermería. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo, correlaciones y pruebas paramétricas bivariadas, ANOVA y T-Student. Resultados: La mayoría de los participantes eran mujeres, con pareja estable e hijos, con edad media de 44,98 años (DT 10,86). El 35,4% de la muestra presenta altos niveles de engagement (altos niveles de energía, implicación y eficacia). El estado civil, la situación laboral del cónyuge y padecer enfermedades crónicas se relaciona con los niveles de eficacia; las actividades de ocio se relacionan con los niveles de energía e implicación. La valoración del clima laboral se relaciona con las tres áreas del engagement; la edad, el tiempo en la unidad de trabajo, los años como enfermera y el tiempo en un puesto de dirección se relacionan con la implicación. Conclusiones: La población estudiada presenta altos niveles de engagement laboral y congruencia entre las sub-escalas de la vida laboral y la organización, con la excepción de la sub-escala de justicia, puesto que los individuos encuestados creen que la organización los trata de forma injusta.Palabras clave: Enfermeras Clínicas; Personal de Enfermería; /enfermería; Salud Laboral; Satisfacción en el Trabajo ABSTRACT:Objectives: To determine the level of engagementy the relationship with the six areas of work life in nursing professionals in the city of Huesca (Spain) and its association with socio-demographic and labor variables.

Background High burnout is reported among health professionals providing in‐patient care to patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Data are lacking on job stressors and burnout among health providers working in dedicated outpatient facilities for patients with suspected or confirmed COVID‐19. Methods This cross‐sectional study, using a parallel mixed‐methods design, was carried out in 2021−2022 among 22 nurses and 22 primary‐care physicians working at a COVID Outpatient Respiratory Center (CORC) (100% participation). Work conditions were assessed via the nurse‐ and physician‐specific Occupational Stressor Index (OSI) and occupational records. Measures of the outcome included the Copenhagen Burnout Index and current tobacco use. Results Time working in CORC displayed significant multivariate associations with personal, work‐ and patient‐related burnout among physicians and current tobacco use among nurses. Total OSI scores showed adjusted odds ratios for work‐related (1.35 (1.01 ± 1.79))(1.31 (0.99 ± 1.75)) and patient‐related burnout (1.35 (1.01 ± 1.81))(1.34 (1.01 ± 1.78)) among physicians and nurses, respectively. Numerous work stressors showed significant multivariate associations with burnout and smoking. Among the stressors were: being contacted outside work hours about patients, inadequate rest breaks, many patients/shifts, difficulty taking time off, insufficient pay, frequently listening to emotionally disturbing accounts, interruptions, increased workload, time pressure, and responsibility. Heavy patient burden/time pressure was most often cited as the hardest part of work in CORC. Increased employment of staff was the most frequently suggested workplace modification. Integrative assessment reveals that increased staff could ameliorate many work stressors associated with burnout and smoking in this cohort. Conclusions Working in CORC is an extra burden. In crisis situations such as the COVID pandemic, more staff is needed. Lowering the total job stressor load is vital.
