Predictive Value of the sFlt-1:PlGF Ratio in Women With Suspected Preeclampsia

Abstract: (N Engl J Med. 2016;374:13–22) Preeclampsia is a serious multisystem disorder affecting up to 5% of pregnancies worldwide. A reliable predictor of preeclampsia would be helpful in allowing health care providers to identify women at risk for developing the disorder. Serum levels of circulating maternal soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1) are known to be elevated in preeclampsia, while levels of placental growth factor (PlGF) are decreased. A high ratio of sFlt-1 to PlGF indicates an increased … Show more

“…Preeclampsia(PE) a heterogeneous multisystem disorder defined by the new onset of hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation affects 2-5% of pregnancies worldwide .Preeclampsia is associated with high risks of iatrogenic preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, placental abruption and perinatal mortality along with maternal morbidity and mortality [1].…”

“…At a UAS of 4, weekly clinical and Doppler sonographic checks are recommended. In this case, supplemental serum screening by sFlt-1/PlGF ratio is also discussed, but generally accepted management protocols are still pending [24].…”

“…Angiogenic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of placenta‐associated complications such as preeclampsia with and without HELLP syndrome 16 . Angiogenic profiling using the soluble fms‐like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt‐1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio can be helpful to identify women with impending preeclampsia and these markers also have the potential to customize the management of patients with established preeclampsia, although this point is still controversial 17–19 . Data on angiogenic factors in AFLP are scarce.…”
