Predicting postoperative peritoneal metastasis in gastric cancer with serosal invasion using a collagen nomogram

Abstract: Accurate prediction of peritoneal metastasis for gastric cancer (GC) with serosal invasion is crucial in clinic. The presence of collagen in the tumour microenvironment affects the metastasis of cancer cells. Herein, we propose a collagen signature, which is composed of multiple collagen features in the tumour microenvironment of the serosa derived from multiphoton imaging, to describe the extent of collagen alterations. We find that a high collagen signature is significantly associated with a high risk of per… Show more

“…The PDAC ECM contains combinations of type I, III, IV, V, and XV collagens (32,34,35). The interaction between collagen and the basement membrane proteins within the ECM plays an important role during malignant transformation (36,37). Increased desmoplasia is thought to contribute to disruption of the basement membrane leading to increased exposure of PDAC cells to interstitial collagens and reduction of basement membrane collagens (33).…”

“…It is well known that GC is a highly malignant cancer type ( 7 ). At present, several biomarkers for GC have been proposed for diagnosis and prognosis, such as CEA and circulating tumor cells ( 50 , 51 ).…”

“…GC is known to be a highly malignant tumor of the digestive system (1)(2)(3). In recent years, the incidence of GC has steadily declined (4), but there are no specific symptoms in early GC, it is often found to metastasized in distant organs, hsa_circ_0060975 is highly expressed and predicts a poor prognosis in gastric cancer such as liver, lymph node metastasis, peritoneal metastasis and lung (1,(5)(6)(7)(8). Some therapies, such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used to treat GC, but the tumor-free 5-year survival rate of GC is only 20-30% (9).…”

“…The non-cellular TME network is comprised of ECM components [ e.g. , collagens ( 61 ), fibronectin ( 62 ), elastin ( 63 ), and laminin ( 64 )], and soluble cellular derivatives [ e.g. , cytokines, chemokines ( 65 ), hormones ( 66 ), metabolites ( 67 , 68 ) and growth factors ( 69 )].…”
