Preconcentration of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) with ethylenediamine-modified graphene oxide

Abstract: We describe a novel solid phase sorbent that was synthesized by coupling graphene oxide (GO) to ethylenediamine (EDA). This nanomaterial (referred to as GO-EDA) is capable of adsorbing the ions of iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and lead. The ethylenediamine-modified graphene oxide was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The analytical procedure relies on (a) sorption of metal ions on GO-EDA dispersed in aqueous samples… Show more

“…The improvement of their selectivity can be realized by application of surfactant [ 15 17 ], suitable chelating agent [ 18 , 19 ], or through chemical functionalization, e.g. via silanization [ 20 22 ] or creation of ester or amide bonds [ 23 , 24 ]. In case of Cr(VI), the amino-functionalized GO seems to be the appropriate adsorbent because the protonated amino groups provide a positive surface charge that is suitable for the adsorption of Cr(VI) anions [ 25 ].…”

“…Graphene and graphene oxide, the new members of the carbon-based materials, exhibit great potential to be a very useful adsorbent for preconcentration of metal ions. [43][44][45][46] In the current research, for the first time, the modification of magnetic GO with the well-known ligand 8-hydroxyquinoline was described and applied to rapid and low-cost extraction of trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from various matrices. Box-Behnken design was employed for the optimization of the extraction and elution steps.…”

“…Ethylene diamine (EDA) [89] and diethylenetriamine (DETA) [89] are two examples of amines that were employed for the functionalization of GO. Ethylene diamine (EDA)-modified GO has been used for the d-SPE of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II) from water samples.…”
