A six week study was conducted to investigate the supplementation of prebiotic (Mannan oligosaccharide-MOS, from yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae), probiotic (Bacillus subtilis-BS, C-3102 strain) and their combination in diets for Nile tilapia. 192 fishes (4.03 ± 0.28 g) were distributed into 16 tanks (40-L), in a completely randomized design (n=4). The following treatments were evaluated: control; prebiotic-2 g MOS kg-1 ; probiotic-2 g BS kg-1 and synbiotic-1 g MOS kg-1 plus 1 g BS kg-1. Fishes fed diets pre-, pro-and synbiotic supplemented performed better in average daily gain, feed conversion rate, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, carcass yield, total and standard length and body height than those maintained on control diets. The probiotic supplementation resulted in higher villus height and intestinal perimeter ratio than the control diet while the pre-and synbiotic supplementation in diets resulted in higher intestinal perimeter ratio. Carcass protein and ether extract were, respectively, higher and lower in fish fed synbiotic diets than other fish. The results of this study indicated that the mannan oligosaccharide and Bacillus subtilis supplementation, isolated or combined (synbiotic), could improve growth, body index, intestine morphometry and carcass composition in Nile tilapia.

A 12‐week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of two dietary probiotics; Bacillus subtilis KCTC 2217 or Bacillus licheniformis KCCM 11775 with two prebiotics; mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) or fructooligosaccharide (FOS) in Japanese eel. Fish averaging 12.8 ± 0.47 g (mean ± SD) were randomly distributed into five treatments with triplicate tanks. A basal control diet (CON) and four synbiotic diets supplementing B. subtilis + MOS (BSM), B. subtilis + FOS (BSF), B. licheniformis + MOS (BLM), and B. licheniformis + FOS (BLF). Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed all synbiotic diets were higher than those of fish fed CON. Immune‐related gene expression of heat shock protein 70 and immunoglobulin M of fish fed BSF and BLM were significantly higher than those of fish fed CON. Fish fed BSF and BLM had significantly higher intestinal villi length than those of fish fed BLF and CON (p < .05). Disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila of fish fed all synbiotic diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed CON (p < .05). Therefore, these results indicated that dietary B. subtilis with FOS (BSF) and B. licheniformis with MOS (BLM) could have beneficial effects on intestinal morphology, and immune‐related gene expression in Japanese eel.

Aditivos alimentares adicionados às rações têm demonstrado resultados positivos na piscicultura ornamentais. No entanto, estudos relacionados à sua adição para espécies ornamentais ainda são escassos, principalmente, em um segmento onde a variedade de espécies é uma característica marcante. A utilização de aditivos alimentares pode favorecer a qualidade das rações e seus efeitos sobre o desempenho dos animais. Nesse âmbito, a presente revisão foi elaborada com o objetivo de apresentar informações sobre a utilização de enzimas, pigmentos, prebióticos, probióticos e simbióticos em dietas para peixes ornamentais. As enzimas digestivas promovem melhor aproveitamento dos nutrientes da dieta, refletindo na melhoria dos índices de desempenho. Os pigmentos atuam intensificando a coloração dos exemplares, aumentando seu valor comercial, e promovem efeito positivo sobre crescimento, desenvolvimento e resposta imune, assim como os aditivos prebióticos, probióticos e simbióticos.
