Pragmatic approach for multistage phasor measurement unit placement: a case study of the Danish power system and inputs from practical experience

Abstract: Summary Effective phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement is a key to the implementation of efficient and economically feasible wide area measurement systems in modern power systems. This paper proposes a pragmatic approach for cost‐effective stage‐wise deployment of PMUs while considering realistic constraints. Inspired from a real world experience, the proposed approach optimally allocates PMU placement in a stage‐wise manner. The proposed approach also considers large‐scale wind integration for effective gr… Show more

“…The current power transmission protection schemes for largescale wind farms have various challenges in HV power transmission networks [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The use of synchronised PMUs installed at both sides of each transmission line based on a global positioning system (GPS) and a high-speed communication system is one of the numerous options to discriminate internal and external faults of interconnected lines.…”

“…The use of synchronised PMUs installed at both sides of each transmission line based on a global positioning system (GPS) and a high-speed communication system is one of the numerous options to discriminate internal and external faults of interconnected lines. Rather et al [10] proposed a pragmatic approach of PMUs to allocate PMU placement optimally for the effective grid-state monitoring of wind generation dynamics. Prakash et al [11] proposed a matrix pencil method as a filter for PMU supported distance relays to eliminate interharmonic signals in the IEEE 14-bus system, which is a series compensated line integrated with the wind energy system.…”

“…Renewable integration has been included in OPP in Rather et al A pragmatic approach was used to find a cost‐effective stage‐wise PMU placement scheme. First, the OPP scheme is derived by PSO, and then it is scheduled over different stages.…”
