Powder Processing Issues for High Quality Advanced Ceramics

Abstract: In this paper, the effect of powder processing conditions on the fracture strength of advanced ceramics is discussed. Manufacturing processes of silicon nitride ceramics and alumina ceramics are utilized to explain the relationship between powder processing conditions and major fracture origin in the ceramics. The preparation conditions of powder slurry are found affecting the structure and strength of powder granules, which can influence the properties of green compact and thus the quality of sintered ceramic… Show more

“…Powder technology directly contributes to achieve these goals with a wide range of powder processing technology, and the development of advanced materials is one of the key issues to promote the achievements of these goals (Hosokawa et al, 2007;Naito et al, 2010;. Recently, some novel powder processing techniques have been developed to fabricate the advanced materials.…”

“…On the other hand, obtaining enhanced properties at lower costs by decreasing the sintering temperature of the materials is another strategic approach. In recent years, many advances have been made towards producing high quality ceramics by adopting various processing and sintering strategies [10][11][12][13]. Dry pressing, the most used conventional method to prepare materials for its large scale commercial applications, requires powders with proper flow and packing behaviours.…”
