Potential Yield Reduction of Sweet and Glutinous Corn Varieties Damaged by The Invasive Pest Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Field Trial Scale

Abstract: The aim of this study is to assess the extent of attack and the potential for decreased production of maize types in the field caused to Spodoptera frugiperda. This study was carried out on a large scale, with four treatments and six replications (10 systematic sample replications). Parameters observed include population development, attack rate, the potential for production decline. The results show that this pest attack began to be found in maize 2 weeks after planting (wap) with an average population of 5.3… Show more

“…Corn is also planted in the Kulonprogo and Gunung Kidul, but the corn in these areas is a fodder crop, while corn in Bantul is sweetcorn. Spodoptera frugiperda prefers sweet corn to fodder corn [ 49 ]. Meanwhile, sweet corn plants in Sleman are sprayed with pesticides more often, resulting in lower S. frugiperda populations in this region.…”

“…Observation of larval populations was carried out using the same as the previous method from Sunari et al (2022), namely through a sampling of larvae using the U-shape method of 25 plants per sample point or 125 clumps per observation plot with an area of 2×1.5×20 m (Figure 1). Observations of the larvae population were carried out every week, starting the 2nd week after planting until 2 weeks before harvesting.…”
