Potential Role of microRNA-21 in the Diagnosis of Gastric Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: IntroductionAccumulating evidences indicate that microRNA-21(miR-21) show significant high concentration in plasma of gastric cancer (GC) patients compared to normal individuals, suggesting that it may be a useful novel diagnostic biomarker for gastric cancer. Therefore, we aimed to assess the potential diagnostic value of miR-21 for gastric cancer in this study.MethodsLiterature database including PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Ovid, SciVerse, Science Direct, Scopus, BioMed Central, Bio… Show more

“…Chemotherapy has been used to treat bladder cancer but it only provides limited benefits [5]. Recent studies found that the down-regulation of certain tumor suppressor genes may trigger the progression of bladder cancer [6]. Therefore, potential gene therapies should be developed to target these tumor suppressor genes [7].…”

“…Some miRNAs, like miR-21, have been subjected to meta- analysis and concluded to be diagnostic biomarkers for GC [44] . Wang et al [45] designed their study with three phases.…”

“…Similarly, by analyzing the serum from 12 acute pancreatitis patients and three healthy controls, Liu et al [46] identified miR7 as one of the three diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Although several systematic reviews [44,[47][48][49] have investigated biomarkers for GC, none has shown that miR-7 could be a biomarker of GC.…”

“…Chan et al have also demonstrated that miR-21 was over-expressed in tissues of 92% patients with gastric cancer (Chan et al, 2008). Concretely, Zeng et al have conducted a meta-analysis which showed that the pooled sensitivity and specificity by using miR-21 to detect gastric cancer were 0.665 (95%CI: 0.550-0.763) and 0.831 (95%CI: 0.694-0.915) respectively (Zeng et al, 2013). Moreover, Li et al have obtained the result that the detection of miR-21 expression yielded 78.80% sensitivity and 100.00% specificity in the diagnosis of lung cancer at optimum conditions (Li et al, 2011).…”
