Potential Regulatory Role of Gibberellic and Humic Acids in Sprouting ofChlorophytum borivilianumTubers

Abstract: Tubers of safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) were immersed in three different concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA3) or humic acid (HA) prior to planting. The highest concentration of GA3 (20 mg L−1) and all concentrations of HA (5, 10, and 15%) appeared to hasten tuber sprouting and promote uniform sprouting pattern. The use of 20 mg L−1 GA3 or 15% HA successfully improved sprouting and mean sprouting time. Safed musli growth and development was improved through the increase in the number of leaves, to… Show more

“…Typical effects of GAs are hypocotyl elongation, interruption of dormancy, promotion of flower and fruit development, and amylase induction. Similar effects have been observed with HS soil additions [57][58][59][60]. In addition to the GA-like impacts, HS has been found to up-regulate the metabolism of CKs and GAs by interacting with genes involved with these hormones [53].…”

“…It also improves the fertility of soil by improving its biological, physical and chemical properties [75][76][77] . Nakasha, et al 78 observed that application of HA before planting of safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum L.) at the rate of 5, 10, and 15% not only enhanced tuber sprouting, but hastened uniform sprouting pattern, and increased leaf area index, leaf area, number of leaves, and total root length. Similarly, S is an essential plant nutrient needed for maintaining optimal plant growth.…”

“…This dormancy can be removed by cold treatment [ 12 , 13 ], by cold stratification [ 14 ], and by GA 3 treatment. GA 3 , alone or together with other chemical or physical treatments, is widely used to remove seed dormancy [ 15 ] or to improve the development of the seedlings, although diverse results have been obtained [ 16 19 ]. Related to this, a study with G. lutea seeds was carried out on germination rates in Petri dishes using GA 3 and a stratification treatment [ 20 ].…”
