Potential of Three Taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) Cultivars as Animal Feed

Abstract: The growth and yield of taro (Colocasia esculenta L.) plants are influenced by the planting material. The use of planting material derived from corms is expected to improve the quality and quantity of taro growth and yield. This research aimed to find the best type of planting material and cultivars for taro growth and the potential of taro plants as animal feed. The experiment was carried out in Jember, East Java ( elevation ±89 m asl). The experiment used the randomized completed block design method with two… Show more

“…However, because taro corms have low protein content, food products made from them should be improved by combining them with other high-protein sources for optimal nutritive value (Sefa-Dedeh and Agyir-Sackey, 2004). Taro leaves and stems have the potential to be animal feeds, notably for pigs, due to their high protein content (Setyawan et al, 2021), however proximate analysis of taro leaves and stems was not done in this study.…”

“…Taro is an energy source that is less desirable than human food, so it can be developed as an alternative energy source for animal feed (Adejumo et al 2013). Taro is also recommended as animal feed because of its nutrition in high protein content in leaves and stems (Setyawan et al 2021).…”
