Potential impacts of climate change on soil properties

Abstract: Climate change is expected to have a vigorous impact on soils and ecosystems due to elevated temperature and changes in precipitation (amount and frequency), thereby altering biogeochemical and hydrological cycles. Several phenomena associated with climate change and anthropogenic activity affect soils indirectly via ecosystem functioning (such as higher atmospheric CO2 concentration and N deposition). Continuous interactions between climate and soils determine the transformation and transport processes. Long-… Show more

“…Research of soil compaction reflects real findings [33], and the methods for preventing or remedying soil compaction have been published by several regional authors [8,9,13,32,34]. Gelybó et al [35] stressed that climate becoming more extreme focuses more attention on methods of prevention and mitigation of tillageinduced compaction.…”

“…This could partly be the result of spatial resolution, county borders are not identical with topographic elements. The general tendency is that most trends disappear due to the increasing extremities (Gelybó, Gy. et al 2018).…”

“…As the occurrence of extreme precipitation events varies in a wide range both in time and space their proper forecast is still an unsolved question (Maheras, P. et al 2018) hence the Carpathian Basin is presumed to be the most questionable area in Europe regarding future trends (Kristóf, E. et al 2017;Gelybó, Gy. et al 2018;László, E. and Salavec, P. 2018), but scientists agree that the number of intense precipitation events is expected to increase (Bartholy, J. and Pongrácz, R. 2007;Cheval, S. et al 2016), the return time of extreme events increases by 1.2-2 times (Piecka, I. et al 2011;Pongrácz, R. et al 2014).…”

“…It influences precipitation patterns which might lead to drought or inundation. An increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation would affect soil properties (Gelybó et al, 2018). It also affects soil organic carbon as a decrease in water ratio lowers the decomposition process and mineralization of different organic compounds (Karmakar et al, 2016;Onwuka and Mang, 2018).…”
