Potassium diperiodatonickelate‐initiated graft copolymerization of methyl acrylate onto organophilic montmorillonite

Abstract: Using potassium diperiodatonickelate (Ni (IV)) as an efficient initiator, the graft copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) onto organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) was successfully performed in an alkaline medium. Three grafting parameters were systematically evaluated as functions of the temperature, the initiator concentration, reaction time, pH value, and the ratio of MA to OMMT substrate. The structure of the titled graft copolymers (OMMT‐g‐PMA) were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (… Show more

“…Peaks found at almost in the similar area suggest the major properties of pure Chitosan are retained even after the inclusion of ashes. Also, the intensity of the peak with pure Chitosan is reduced in both Carbon ash inclusion and Silica ash inclusion, showing the extensive coverage of the respective ashes 15 . Another conclusion can be derived by observing the crystallinity of the peaks that, the amorphous nature of the original pure Chitosan is not disturbed.…”

“…The copolymerization was initiated by Ni (IV), which possesses higher initiate efficiency compared with ammonium persulfate (APS), potassium persulfate (PPS), 2, 2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) [7]. In the previous study of our group, graft copolymers with high grafting efficiency and grafting percentage have been obtained by using Ni (IV) as an efficient initiator [8,9]. Moreover, the graft copolymerization is able to be carried out at a mild temperature of 35 ℃.…”
