Postpartal Ovarian Function in Holstein and Crossbred Cows on Large Scale Farms in Hungary

Abstract: The post partum resumption of cyclic ovarian activity was followed up by regular rectal palpation and milk progesterone assay on 249 Holstein-Friesian and crossbred cows under Hungarian large scale farm conditions. The most frequent abnormalities were delayed start of cycling (36.1 YO), cycles of irregular length (17.3 %), cystic degeneration of the ovaries (16.5 YO), cessation of cyclicity (7.6 YO) and persistent corpus luteum (2.4 Yo). Sometimes more than one abnormality occurred in the same animal. The dura… Show more

“…The interval elapsed from calving to the first regular P4 elevation (detected from at least 2 consecutive samples, with peak concentration above 1-00 nmoV1) was considered as postpartum acyclic period. The duration of subsequent CL phases (with elevated P4 values) as well as of follicular phases (with baseline P4 levels) were estimated (Huszenicza et al, 1987). Forced ZuteoZysis attributable to the simultaneous inflammation was supposed when mastitis was observed in a CL phase but baseline P4 value was detected in the subsequent sample.…”

“…Although problematic, the possible reason for better responses of primiparous cows to fertility and synchronization protocols is that there is a lower risk of metabolic problems in early lactation (Erb and Grohn, 1988;Gröhn and Rajala-Schultz, 2000). Similarly, Huszenicza et al (1987) showed that reproductive disorders, except for the later onset of the postpartum ovarian activity, were less frequent in primiparous cows compared with others. More recently, Meikle et al (2004) contrarily indicated that the effect of NEB was observed more on primiparous cows than multiparous cows.…”

“…Possible reasons for better fertility in primiparous cows include reduced risk of metabolic disorders and less reproductive problems in early lactation. Older cows are more susceptible to metabolic (Erb and Grohn 1988) and reproductive (Huszenicza et al. 1987) problems than primiparous cows.…”

“…Furthermore, apart from the late onset of cyclicity, primiparous cows had fewer reproductive problems compared with pluriparous cows (Whitmore et al. 1974; Huszenicza et al. 1987).…”
