This research evaluated the influence of different spatial arrangements on the growth of three Eucalyptus clones as well as the characteristics that influence the quality of the timber. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa-Beef Cattle station, Campo Grande city, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The design was in randomized blocks in a factorial scheme (3 × 3) with plots subdivided by time and four repetitions. Three clones of Eucalyptus were used (Urocam VM1, Grancam 1277 and Urograndis I144), and there were three spatial arrangements (single, double and triple row). At 20 and 32 months after planting, the variables, total plant height, diameter at breast height (DBH), volume of timber per tree, volume of timber per hectare, straightness and forking, and cylindricity were evaluated. The spatial arrangements influenced the behavior of the genetic material, and the greatest tree heights were observed in the triple row arrangements. The single row arrangement provided greater gains in DBH. The Grancam clone stood out from the others in the characteristics of straightness and forking, independent of the spatial arrangement and time of evaluation. It was concluded that the volume of timber per tree and the volume of timber per hectare were associated with the planting density, low density results in lower volume.

ResumoA garapa é uma espécie arbórea com ampla dispersão pelo Brasil, sendo bastante utilizada em programas de reflorestamento e na recuperação de áreas degradadas. Sua propagação via sementes apresenta dificuldades devido ao mecanismo da dormência, causada pela impermeabilidade do tegumento. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar métodos para a superação de dormência em sementes de garapa. Os tratamentos incluíram água aquecida (80 °C) por 30 segundos; ácido sulfúrico (75 e 98%) por 1,0; 3,0; 5,0; 7,0 e 9,0 minutos; calor seco (40 °C) por 72 e 96 horas; calor úmido (60 °C) por 24 e 48 horas; hipoclorito de sódio (10%) por 5,0; 7,5; 10,0; 12,5 e 15,0 horas e testemunha. A imersão em água aquecida a 80 °C por 30 segundos provocou a morte das sementes, enquanto a escarificação com ácido sulfúrico, independente da concentração e do tempo de exposição, foi eficiente para a superação da dormência. Os tratamentos com calor seco, calor úmido e hipoclorito de sódio superaram parcialmente a impermeabilidade do tegumento das sementes de garapa. MACBR ABSTRACTThe garapa is a tree species with wide dispersal by Brazil, being widely used in reforestation programs and restoration of degraded areas. Propagation by seeds presents difficulties due to the mechanism of dormancy caused by the impermeability of the integument. The objective of this study was to evaluate methods for overcoming seed dormancy garapa. The treatments included hot water (80 °C) for 30 seconds; sulfuric acid (75 and 98%) for 1,3,5,7 and 9 minutes, dry heat (40 °C) for 72 to 96 hours, moist heat (60 °C) for 24 and 48 hours; sodium hypochlorite (10%) for 5,0; 7,5; 10,0; 12,5 and 15,0 hours and witness. Immersion in water at 80 ºC for 30 seconds caused the death of the seeds, while with sulfuric acid, independent of concentration and exposure time, was efficient to break dormancy. Treatment with dry heat, wet heat and sodium hypochlorite partially overcome the impermeability of the seeds coat of garapa.

Reclamation of copper contaminated sites using forest species may be an efficient alternative to reduce the negative impact. The aim of this study was to quantify the growth and evaluate the quality of seedlings of native species at different doses of copper in the soil. The experimental design was completely randomized, with seven replications in a factorial arrangement (3×9), using three indigenous species of plants (Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Mimosa scabrella and Apuleia leiocarpa) and nine doses of copper in the soil (0, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420 and 480 mg kg-1).The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse which the seedlings were grown for 180 days. The experimental units were plastic pots of 125 cm3 filled with Oxisol. The results indicated that the levels of copper applied to the soil decreased the quality of seedlings and growth of Apuleia leiocarpato a lesser extent compared with Mimosa scabrella and Anadenanthera macrocarpa. Anadenanthera macrocarpa was the forest species that resulted in the lowest copper translocation from roots to shoots. In addition, the Apuleia leiocarpa exhibited high resistance and tolerance for copper in the soil and also, it is highlighted an ability for copper phytoremediation.
