Positron Emission Tomography and Computer Tomography (PET/CT) in Prostate, Bladder, and Testicular Cancers

Abstract: Positron emission computed tomography (PET) is a functional, noninvasive method for imaging regional metabolic processes that is nowadays most often combined to morphological imaging with computed tomography (CT). Its use is based on the well-founded assumption that metabolic changes occur earlier in tumors than morphologic changes, adding another dimension to imaging. This article will review the established and investigational indications and radiopharmaceuticals for PET/CT imaging for prostate cancer, bladd… Show more

“…Many institutions tend to use the knowledge provided by functional imaging, associated with conventional imaging to better define the target volumes. Studies on the role of PET/CT (positron emission tomography coupled with a CT-scan) in the determination of treatment volumes are also under way [56]. …”

“…LDH is a nonspecific marker of overall tumor burden ( Junuzovic et al., 2011 ). In clinical examination, in addition to detecting the biomarkers of testicular tumors in the serum, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and biopsy can also be used for auxiliary diagnosis ( Hohsteter et al., 2014 ; Marko et al., 2017 ; Zouhair et al., 2010 ). Studies have found that the ultrasonographic results of testicular seminoma showed hypoechoicity compared with the background testis ( Marko et al., 2017 ).…”

“…In this respect, positron emission tomography (PET) represents a sensitive tool for non-invasive imaging of all tissues throughout the entire body [8,9]. At present time for PET imaging, 18 F-fluoro-deoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) or 18 F-fluorocholine ( 18 F-FCH) are injected as radioactive tracers into the blood stream.…”
