Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone Supported Brønsted Acidic Catalyst for Esterification

Abstract: A polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) supported Brønsted acidic catalyst ([PVPP-BS]HSO4) was prepared by coupling SO3H-functionalized polyvinylpolypyrrolidone with H2SO4in this work. After the characterization through FT-IR, FESEM, TG, BET, and elemental analysis, it was found that 1,4-butane sultone (BS) and sulfuric acid reacted with PVPP and were immobilized on PVPP surface. The prepared[PVPP-BS]HSO4catalyst shows high catalytic activity for a series of esterification reactions and could be separated from the r… Show more

“…After the reaction was completed, the product was investigated by gas chromatography (Agilent GC-7890A) using a Thermo TG-SQC capillary column (15 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm), which equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID). Acid value was determined by titration according to the procedures described in the literature [29]. Citric acid conversion and the TBC yield were calculated using the following equations [9]:…”

“…Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), a commercialized cross-linked polymer adsorbent, has been used as a polymer support since it has many advantages, including being nontoxic, high adsorption capacity, and being insoluble in all types of solvents [25,26]. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that PVPP-supported catalysts have high catalytic ability and reusability in organic reactions [27][28][29].…”
