Polysulfone/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Composite Membrane: Effect of Coating Dope Composition on Membrane Characteristics and Performance

Abstract: The asymmetric polysulfone/polyvinylidene fluoride composite membranes with vary polyvinylidene fluoride levels in coating dope were prepared by non-solvent induced phase separation. N-methyl pyrrolidinone and distilled-water were used as a combination of solvent and non-solvent, while ammonium chloride was applied as a porogenic additive in the system. Physical characteristics of the prepared membranes were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. The membranes performance was analyzed in term of pure w… Show more

“…In previous studies, the effects of PVDF addition on the characteristics of PSf/PVDF composite membranes have been studied [7]- [11]. The results show that the physical morphology, mechanical strength also thermal dan chemical resistant of the composite membrane, are strongly influenced by the concentration of PVDF in the blending solution which migration is found to occur at a limited level however the hydrophobic membrane properties are slightly elevated.…”

“…3 For this reason, various methods are used to improve membrane performance, among them the improvement of its hydrophilicity through the addition of hydrophilic component. [4][5][6][7] The involvement of hydrophilic additive in membrane modification has been studied by a number of researchers in the past. [8][9][10][11] It is reported to have successfully improved the characteristics of the membrane when it comes to porous properties and surface hydrophilicity, a very advantageous feature in filtration.…”

“…This condition is induced by mechanical, thermal and chemical characteristics of excellent PSf. Regarding its chemical resistance, PSf has a wide pH range application [1] - [4]. These advantages have made PSf membranes have wide application areas, including gas and liquid separation [5], fuel cells [6], and ion exchange processes [7].…”
