Nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (HA-g-PEG) of different molar mass was used as a thermal stabilizer to prepare polyoxymethylene (POM) composites by a melt processing method. The chemical and crystalline structure of (HA-g-PEG) and POM/HA-g-PEG composites was investigated by means of FTIR and XRD. The thermal properties, degree of crystallinity, and melting behaviour of POM-based composites were analysed with TG, DSC, and TOPEM DSC methods. The tensile strength, Young’s modulus, toughness, and wettability of POM were investigated as well. A preliminary assessment of bioactivity, in vitro chemical stability, and formaldehyde release from POM/HA-g-PEG composites by Schiff’s test was also performed. An SEM/EDX method was used to observe the morphology of POM/HA-g-PEG composites. The results indicate that the addition of 1% HA-g-PEG slightly increases the melting temperature and degree of crystallinity. In small amounts, HA-g-PEG particles probably act as nucleating agents for the POM crystallization process. Incorporation of 5% HA-g-PEG to POM caused a decrease in the crystallinity of the polymer matrix, as a result, some mechanical properties of POM/HA-g-PEG composites also decreased. The thermal stability of POM/HA-g-PEG composites improved significantly from 309°C for unmodified POM to 342°C for POM/10.0% HA-g-PEG 600. The most effective thermal stabilizer was synthesized with the lowest mass-average molar mass PEG. The in vitro bioactivity test confirmed that, as the average molar mass of PEG in HA-g-PEG hybrids increased, POM-based composites indicated higher bioactivity. The in vitro chemical stability analysis results showed that both the POM matrix and the HA-g-PEG additive remain stable during the whole incubation time. Importantly, after seven days of dynamic incubation, no formaldehyde was detected in all filtrates, which is crucial in biomedical applications, among others.

Abstract. During the manufacturing of work pieces, geometrical deviations from the intended nominal geometry of the designer are inevitable. The procedure of conformance testing defined in ISO 14253-1:2018-07 is used to ensure the function of a work piece by verifying the geometrical compliance with pre-defined tolerance specifications. Depending on the measurement setup used for the validation step, it is possible that the local measurement uncertainty is too large in order to provide a meaningful conformance evaluation. This paper aims to demonstrate the complete workflow of the determination of the locally defined single point uncertainty and its components (systematic and random measurement error, respectively) for a given measurement task. It was shown for an optical measurement setup in combination with an industrial X-ray computed tomography reference measurement system that different necessary colouring methods of polymer (POM) gear wheels, which are required to enable measurements using structured-light scanning, have a measurable influence on the local distribution of the measurement uncertainty. Because of the fact that the presented method is dependent on a discrete surface sampling, the effects of different polygonization settings during the creation of the areal measurement result were evaluated in order to rate the reduced data complexity against the hereby possibly increased measurement uncertainty. The gained information regarding the local measurement uncertainty of a measurement setup can then be used for downstream processes in various use cases, e.g. for the improvement of holistic tolerance simulation models or the improvement of geometrical measurements using weighted regression analysis. Additionally, the visualization of the areal distribution of the measurement uncertainty enables a powerful tool to optimize the used measurement setup.

Thermo‐mechanical properties of epoxy composites filled with inorganic particulate fillers for robust solder mask application

Filler components play a crucial role as thermo‐mechanical reinforcement to the epoxy‐based solder mask, ensuring effective insulation and passivation. This study investigates the impact of different inorganic filler types (talc, silica (SiO2), boron nitride (BN) and barium sulfate (BaSO4)) and loadings (5 and 15 wt%) on the tensile and thermal properties of the epoxy composites. The composites were blended, cast and thermally cured. Of these composites, only 15 wt% SiO2/epoxy composite exhibits notable increments in both tensile strength and modulus, surpassing unfilled epoxy by 11.65% and 31.9%, respectively. It also displays the highest elongation at break, supported by small particle size, high specific surface area and minimal void volume fraction. For thermal tests, the addition of all fillers increases the storage modulus in both glassy and rubbery regions, especially 15 wt% talc/epoxy composite with 30.09% increment at 25 °C. Additionally, all fillers raise the glass transition temperature (Tg), notably improving it by 9 °C in the 15 wt% BN/epoxy composite. Moreover, their inclusion generally enhances the onset decomposition temperature (Tonset) and reduces weight loss during decomposition. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
