Polymorphisms of interleukin‐1 and interleukin‐2 genes in patients with gastric cancer in Korea

Abstract: Background and Aim: Interleukin (IL)-1 gene polymorphism has been reported to be associated with the increment of gastric cancer (GC) and the decrement of duodenal ulcers (DU). In addition, IL-2 is known to induce Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastric atrophy, but it is not known whether IL-2 gene polymorphism increases the risk of GC (GC) or peptic ulcer diseases. Therefore, we compared the genotypes of IL-1B, IL-1RN, and IL-2 gene polymorphisms with risk of gastric ulcers (GU), GC, and DU in Kor… Show more

“…Polymorphism -330 T/G (rs2069762) is located in the gene promoter region and is associated with increased susceptibility to inflammatory diseases and cancer, including rheumatoid arthritis and myeloid leukemia [28][29][30]. Additionally, studies show that changes in the serum IL-2 levels were found when this polymorphism was analyzed [29][30][31]. This finding was confirmed because the presence of allele G in gene position -330 was correlated with reduced IL-2 production in vivo [32].…”

“…Several IL-2 gene polymorphisms are known, including those at positions -330 T/G and +114 T/G. Polymorphism -330 T/G (rs2069762) is located in the gene promoter region and is associated with increased susceptibility to inflammatory diseases and cancer, including rheumatoid arthritis and myeloid leukemia [28][29][30]. Additionally, studies show that changes in the serum IL-2 levels were found when this polymorphism was analyzed [29][30][31].…”

“…The majority of these studies have been enrolled on cancers, such as gastric [AlMoundhri, 2006;Geon Shin, 2008], bladder [Bid, 2006], breast [Lee, 2007], colorectal [Viet, 2005], cervical [Sousa, 2012;Fujiwaki, 2003], vulvar [Grimm, 2004], and ovarian [Sehouli, 2003;Hefler, 2002]. Nevertheless, there are controversial results regarding the potential role of this polymorphism in the development of cancer.…”

“…The -330T/G polymorphism lies in the promoter region of the IL-2 gene and is implicated in the increased susceptibility to a range of inflammatory diseases and cancers, including gastric atrophy from Helicobacter pylori infection, rheumatoid arthritis, gastric cancer, and myelogenous leukemia (Amirzargar et al, 2005;Pawlik et al, 2005;Togawa et al, 2005;Shin et al, 2008;Wu et al, 2009). However, no studies to date have examined the association between IL-2 polymorphisms and NHL.…”
