Polymers for Combating Biocorrosion

Abstract: Biocorrosion has been considered as big trouble in many industries and marine environments due to causing of great economic loss. The main disadvantages of present approaches to prevent corrosion include being limited by environmental factors, being expensive, inapplicable to field, and sometimes inefficient. Studies show that polymer coatings with anticorrosion and antimicrobial properties have been widely accepted as a novel and effective approach to prevent biocorrosion. The main purpose of this review is t… Show more

“…Corrosion has now been widely acknowledged as a big problem in drinking water distribution systems, medical, marine, and food processing industry (Prest et al, 2016;Jia et al, 2017;Guo et al, 2018). Both chemical and biological factors can accelerate the rate of corrosion (Kip and van Veen, 2015).…”

“…Biocorrosion or MIC involves multiple microbial mechanisms including direct EET with metals acting as solid electron donor, biosynthesis of enzymes attacking metals, production of volatile corrosive molecules, acidity generation, the formation of biological galvanic cells, and differential aeration due to the presence of dense biofilms ( Tremblay et al., 2017 ). Microbially influenced corrosion can be controlled by inhibiting microbial metabolism via different strategies such as cathodic protection, biocide, protective coating, and competitive beneficial bacterial biofilm ( Rasheed et al., 2019 ; Guo et al., 2018 ). Several studies have investigated bacteria-repulsing and bactericidal GMs for the coating of metallic surfaces to prevent MIC.…”

“…The polymeric coating is to provide barrier property on material surface and has been an outstanding choice for anticorrosion purpose due to its production accessibility. However, polymer resin has its shortcoming sustainability that it contains free volume, micro-voids, and exhibits hydrophilicity due to their polar group which gives strong affinity toward water molecules (Ammar et al, 2016b;Guo et al, 2018). These drawbacks lead corrosion process through diffusion of corrosive agents such as oxygen, water molecules, and aggressive anions, create deterioration pathways to reach the coating-metal interface.…”
