Polymeric nanoparticles for topical delivery of alpha and beta arbutin: preparation and characterization

Abstract: To investigate the use of chitosan nanoparticles (CS-TPP-NPs) as carriers for α- and β-arbutin. In this study, CS-TPP-NPs containing α- and β-arbutin were prepared via the ionic cross-linking of CS and TPP and characterized for particle size, zeta potential, and dispersity index. The entrapment efficiency and loading capacity of various β-arbutin concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6%) were also investigated. SEM, TEM FTIR, DSC and TGA analyses of the nanoparticles were performed to further characterize … Show more

“…Polymeric nanocarriers (nanocapsules or nanospheres) are composed of biodegradable and/or biocompatible polymers such as poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) [26] and chitosan [23,25] and they have a size ranging from 100 to 1000 nm. The substance is encapsulated, dispersed, or adsorbed on the surface of these particles.…”

“…In a comparative study of dermal delivery in different carriers, a nanocrystalline vesicle, smartCrystals®, exhibited superficial deposition of quercetin on the skin surface, which is ideal for the design of a sunscreen product, whereas a lipid nanocapsule system promoted delivery into viable epidermis that holds the promise for cosmeceutical treatment . Besides quercetin, there are many other polyphenols reported with improved storage stability and dermal bioavailability after entrapment and protection in certain delivery systems, including arbutin from Ericaceae , Caprifoliaceae families , resveratrol from Arachis hypogaea Linn , Vaccinium spp. , gallic acid from Vigna subterraenea L. , rutin from Rutaceae and curcumin from Curcuma longa .…”

“…For lipid‐based carriers, samples usually need to be immobilized by freezing before observation by cryo‐electron microscopy . In addition, the crystal structure of nanoparticles can be determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) . Multilayered vesicle structures can be analysed by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) .…”
