Polymeric hydrogels for burn wound care: Advanced skin wound dressings and regenerative templates

Abstract: Wound closure represents a primary goal in the treatment of very deep and/or large wounds, for which the mortality rate is particularly high. However, the spontaneous healing of adult skin eventually results in the formation of epithelialized scar and scar contracture (repair), which might distort the tissues and cause lifelong deformities and disabilities. This clinical evidence suggests that wound closure attained by means of skin regeneration, instead of repair, should be the true goal of burn wound managem… Show more

“…Considering the whole healing process, the use of soft and wet hydrogels can accelerate wound closure and decrease the possibility of infection and death. In fact, Madaghiele et al (28) reported that hydrogels can absorb and retain wound exudates; in particular, the tight mesh size of hydrogels prevents bacteria from reaching the wound. Conversely, compared to the wound treated with pure poly(NIPAm-MBA) hydrogel, the wound treated with sericin-poly(NIPAm-MBA) hydrogel shows a faster healing rate on day 3.…”

“…Inflammatory reactions, granulation tissue formation, and re-epithelialization are the three classic processes during wound healing [1, 2]. Macrophages, neutrophils, and lymphocytes participate in inflammatory responses in wounds.…”

“…Most researches were documented the hydrogel didn't effect on the process of wound healing, except burn wound healing due to the hydrogel have large amount of water to moist the burn area and prevent the infection (16).…”
