Platelet distribution width correlates with prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Platelets play a multifaceted role in cancer progression and metastasis. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are commonly used platelet parameters from routine blood test. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between platelet indices and prognosis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A total of 270 patients who were diagnosed with NSCLC between January 2009 and December 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients’ characteristics and hema… Show more

“…In the multivariate analyses, we illustrated that PDW was an independent prognostic factor. The results of the survival analysis indicated that elevated PDW was associated with better DFS and OS in patients with NSCLC, which was consistent with our initial results . Next, we performed subgroup analyses according to the different TNM stages and different histological subtypes.…”

“…In this study, we investigated the prognostic value of PDW in 750 patients with NSCLC. To the best of our knowledge, some researchers have analyzed the prognostic value of preoperative PDW in some solid tumors . However, the clinical significance of preoperative PDW in NSCLC patients is not yet clear.…”

“…An increase P-LCR with increase MPV in stage 0 and 1 indicates that P-LCR may have a similar diagnostic value as MPV [30] in early stage of breast cancer. Since PDW is a measure of platelet volume heterogeneity [33] it goes to show that slightly high PDW value seen in stage 2, 3, and 4 cancer reflects increase heterogeneity in platelet volume and size in these stages of breast cancer in women.…”
