Background The width of red blood cell distribution (RDW) is correlated with some diseases, but its clinical value and prognostic role in cervical cancer is unclear. Methods We used receiver operating characteristic curves to evaluate the diagnostic ability of RDW and other clinical parameters in cervical cancer based on a case–control design. Using retrospective data, we explored the correlation of RDW with overall (OS) and progression-free (PFS) survival using Kaplan–Meier analysis and univariate and multivariate Cox regression with the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). A restricted cubic plot was used to evaluate the nonlinear association between RDW and prognosis risk. Results RDW was significantly higher in cases than in controls (14.6±1.7 vs 12.5±1.8, P <0.001). It showed high diagnostic accuracy for cervical cancer, with a sensitivity of 79.3%, specificity of 65.6%, and area under the curve of 0.802 (95% CI, 0.775–0.827) with a cutoff value of 13.88. There was a significant positive correlation between RDW and C-reactive protein (r=0.434, P =0.023). Multivariate Cox regression indicated that it was independently associated with a poorer PFS (HR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.25–3.18, P <0.001) and OS (HR, 2.73; 95% CI, 1.61–4.64, P <0.001). RDW>14.66 showed a nonlinear increased risk for a poor PFS and OS. Conclusion RDW is an easy, quick, and inexpensive tool for the early detection and risk management of cervical cancer. A greater RDW is associated with a poor prognosis in cervical cancer.

Inflammatory proteins activate platelets, which have been observed to be directly related to cancer progression and development. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the possible association between Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) and cancer (diagnostic capacity of MPV, relation to survival, the severity of the disease, and metastasis). A literature review was performed in the online database PubMed and Google Scholar for the period of 2010–2022. In total, 83 studies including 21,034 participants with 12 different types of cancer (i.e., gastric cancer, colon cancer, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, renal cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, gallbladder cancer, and multiple myeloma) were identified. The role of MPV has been extensively investigated in several types of cancer, such as gastric, colon, breast, and lung cancer, while few data exist for other types, such as renal, gallbladder cancer, and multiple myeloma. Most studies in gastric, breast, endometrium, thyroid, and lung cancer documented an elevated MPV in cancer patients. Data were less clear-cut for esophageal, ovarian, and colon cancer, while reduced MPV was observed in renal cell carcinoma and gallbladder cancer. Several studies on colon cancer (4 out of 6) and fewer on lung cancer (4 out of 10) indicated an unfavorable role of increased MPV regarding mortality. As far as other cancer types are concerned, fewer studies were conducted. MPV can be used as a potential biomarker in cancer diagnosis and could be a useful tool for the optimization of treatment strategies. Possible underlying mechanisms between cancer and MPV are discussed. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the exact role of MPV in cancer progression and metastasis.

Purpose This study assessed the prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and cancer antigen 125 (CA125) in predicting the prognosis of endometrial cancer (EC) patients. Patients and Methods In this study, we included 525 patients with EC between January 2013 and January 2019. Demographic and clinical indicators were collected, and the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) and cutoff values were calculated between the early and advanced stages of EC. Independent risk factors associated with EC prognosis were assessed using Cox regression analyses and the Kaplan–Meier method. Results Compared to women in the early stage of EC, women with advanced stage had significantly elevated RDW coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) and CA125 levels and lower mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) (both P < 0.05). Consequently, RDW-CV and CA125 were found to be independent risk factors for EC by using ROC curve and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The survival analysis curve was used to assess the diagnostic value of RDW-CV, CA125, and their combination in the prognosis of EC. The results showed that patients with high expression of RDW-CV and CA125 had worse overall survival than those with low expression. Moreover, multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that RDW-CV+CA125=2 was an independent prognostic factor. Conclusion These findings suggest that CA125 combined with RDW-CV has a good prognostic value for EC. Thus, the RDW-CV+CA125 score is a promising prognostic marker for the clinical decision-making process regarding EC outcomes.
