Plasma Resistin Associated With Myocardium Injury in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome

Abstract: esistin was first found in 2001 by Steppan and coworkers as a novel peptide synthesized and secreted from murine adipocytes. 1 Circulating resistin level was increased in diet-induced and genetic forms of obesity but could be decreased using rosiglitazone therapy. Administration of anti-resistin antibodies improved blood glucose control and insulin action in mice with dietinduced obesity. 1 Resistin is thought to be an adipokine associated with insulin resistance.Subsequent studies of its role in human obesity… Show more

“…32, 33 Adipokine resistin, expressed in white adipose tissue specifically, antagonizes insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism, inhibits adipocyte differentiation and has a direct proinflammatory effect on vascular endothelial cells. 34 Although plasma resistin levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome are elevated, and increased resistin levels are considered to be a marker of myocardial ischemia and injury, 35 another recently published study failed to demonstrate a cardioprotective effect of resistin against ischemia-reperfusion injury. 36 On the contrary, overexpression of resistin in adult cultured cardiomyocytes significantly alters myocyte mechanics by depressing cell contractility as well as contraction and relaxation velocities, and promotes cardiac hypertrophy.…”

“…It was recently shown that resistin correlates with the levels of biomarkers for cardiac injury, and it has been suggested as a marker of the severity of myocardium ischemic injury [80].…”
