SUMMARYHuman Bartonellosis has an acute phase characterized by fever and hemolytic anemia, and a chronic phase with bacillary angiomatosis-like lesions. This cross-sectional pilot study evaluated the immunology patterns using pre-and post-treatment samples in patients with Human Bartonellosis. Patients between five and 60 years of age, from endemic areas in Peru, in the acute or chronic phases were included. In patients in the acute phase of Bartonellosis a state of immune peripheral tolerance should be established for persistence of the infection. Our findings were that elevation of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and numeric abnormalities of CD4 + and CD8 + T-Lymphocyte counts correlated significantly with an unfavorable immune state. During the chronic phase, the elevated levels of IFN-g and IL-4 observed in our series correlated with previous findings of endothelial invasion of B. henselae in animal models.

Sepsis is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units. Unfortunately, there is no gold standard for diagnosing sepsis as clinical and laboratory signs are neither sensitive enough nor specific enough, and microbiological studies often remain negative. Thus, there is a need for clinical or laboratory tools to distinguish between sepsis and non-infectious inflammatory disorders. Among the potentially useful markers of sepsis, procalcitonin has been suggested to be the most promising, although results are variable depending on the severity of illness and degree of infection in the patient population studied. The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, of which expression is upregulated on phagocytic cells in the presence of bacteria or fungi. Here we report on the potential usefulness of assessing the soluble form of TREM-1 (sTREM-1) in biological fluids for the diagnosis of microbial infection.

Augmented sensitivity to benzodiazepine in septic shock rats than in both the control and the shamoperated groups, f3H]-diazepam radioligand binding assays demonstrated that the number of receptors in the septic rats was increased in the forebrain (CLP rats; control rats; cerebellum (CLP rats; control rats; and brain stem (CLP rats; control rats; compared with the control and shamoperated rats (P < 0.05). In conclusion, it was considered that th e increased number of benzodiazepine receptors may be one cause of the neuronal alteration observed in septic shock animals.
