Plasma Antioxidant Capacity in Morbidly Obese Patients Before and After Weight Loss

Abstract: Plasma TAC and cTAC values are impaired in morbidly obese patients. Weight loss from an intragastric balloon is associated with significant increase in plasma cTAC values. Plasma TAC values, after the weight loss remain unchanged, possibly due to a decrease in uric acid, an important endogenous antioxidant.

“…In adults, Tsai et al (2009) showed similar findings, a 4% reduction in body weight did not change either plasma or urinary F(2)-isoprostane [51]. Moreover, Melissas et al (2006) did not observe any changes in serum TAC after surgical weight reduction [25].…”

“…Melissas and cols. observed that weight loss and decrease in BMI obtained through placing a balloon in the stomach of extremely obese individuals for 6 months, increased the plasma antioxidant capacity (26). Bougoulia and cols.…”

“…Thus, bilirubin may provide a new marker for the assessment of atherogenic risk as well as a therapeutic target for the modification of atherogenic risk. Indeed, several groups of investigators have demonstrated that weight loss therapy (either by sibutramine or via placement of an intragastric balloon) is associated with a rapid increase in total bilirubin levels and antioxidant capacity 46,47) .…”
