It is known that the use of medicinal plants can improve health, and their study in Brazil is promising due to their floristic megadiversity, mainly in Cerrado, where several traditional populations live, and many endemic species can be found. From data obtained through interviews, this research recorded the medicinal plants used by 40 residents of urban and rural areas of Sobradinho (DF), situated in Cerrado, and evaluated their socioeconomic profiles. Rural women had a greater knowledge about medicinal plants. Most of the urban population had a full college education, while most of the rural population had not completed their basic education. Although the urban population also used literature, the main source of knowledge came from family members. The level of ethnobotanical knowledge was vast in Sobradinho and similar in urban and rural areas, where the interviewees cited 86 names of medicinal plants that corresponded to 126 species, of which 56.35% were native to Brazil and 43.65% exotic. All of the species were categorized into 48 botanical families, with Asteraceae, Lamiaceae and Fabaceae being the most cited, respectively. Although they knew many native species of medicinal plants, the population used more exotic ones, such as mint, lemongrass and boldo to treat conditions such as stress, flu and indigestion, respectively.

Caesalpinia ferrea C. Mart., popularly known as “Jucá” or “Pau-ferro”, belongs to the Fabaceae family, and is classified as a native and endemic species in Brazil. Numerous studies that portray its ethnobotany, chemical composition, and biological activities exist in the literature. The present study aimed to systematically review publications addressing the botanical aspects, uses in popular medicine, phytochemical composition, and bioactivities of C. ferrea. The searches focused on publications from 2015 to March 2020 using the Scopus, Periódicos Capes, PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases. The leaves, fruits, seeds, and bark from C. ferrea are used in popular medicine to treat disorders affecting several systems, including the circulatory, immune, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, and conjunctive systems. The most commonly found chemical classes in phytochemical studies are flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and other phenolic compounds. The biological properties of the extracts and isolated compounds of C. ferrea most cited in the literature were antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, and healing potential. However, further studies are still needed to clarify a link between its traditional uses, the active compounds, and the reported pharmacological activities, as well as detailed research to determine the toxicological profile of C. ferrea.

Brazil has a great biodiversity of varied species in flora and fauna in its diverse ecosystems. Indigenous peoples and traditional populations, in some way, are primarily responsible for the conservation and biological diversity of our ecosystems, a product of the interaction of nature management in traditional models. This work aimed to register the traditional uses of “Terramicina” Alternanthera dentata (Moench) Stuchlik., In the community of Bacuriteua, besides of course registering the botanical information, as well as describing the active principles present in the plant, in order to contribute to the maintenance popular knowledge and the conservation of this species. The methodology was based on a qualitative approach, through field research employing data collection techniques with free listing, interviews with key informants, forms, observation and collection of plant samples for later identification. From the results of the research, it was registered that the researched community has a wide knowledge in relation to the use of medicinal plants, more precisely the “Terramicina”, since the species is used for the treatment of headache, injuries, allergies and urinary tract infection. Thus, it is important to disseminate such knowledge to future generations, in addition to the importance of the coherent use of medicinal species.
