Planktic Foraminiferal Species Turnover Across Deep-Sea Aptian/ Albian Boundary Sections

Abstract: A major planktic foraminiferal species turnover accompanied by a dramatic reduction in shell size, a fundamental change in shell architecture, and a precipitous drop in the abundance of planktic relative to benthic species occurs across the Aptian/Albian boundary interval (AABI) at globally distributed deep-sea sections. Extinction of the large and distinctive planktic foraminifer Paraticinella eubejaouaensis, used to denote a level at or near the Aptian/ Albian boundary, coincides with the extinctions of rela… Show more

The presence of M. renilaevis, a small-sized species whose appearance level is considered a good proxy for placing the Aptian/Albian boundary (Huber and Leckie, 2011;Petrizzo et al, 2012Petrizzo et al, , 2013, confirms the assignment of this interval to the lower Albian M. rischi Zone. “…Abundances of planktic foraminiferal species were estimated relative to the total planktic assemblage. First occurrences (FOs) and last occurrences (LOs) of marker species were used to identify biostratigraphic events, mainly following Petrizzo and Huber (2006), Huber and Leckie (2011), and Petrizzo and others (2012). Average test diameter was based on measurements of at least five specimens of each species/ sample.…”

“…The presence of the ostracod Soudanella laciniosa, a dominantly neritic species in the Poty quarry (Rodrigues et al 2014) Huber and Leckie (2011), are limited to the P0 zone. Thus, the specimen of Muricohedbergella monmouthensis recorded in this section could be reworked.…”
