A combined biostratigraphic and palaeoecological study of foraminifera, ostracodes and microfacies was carried out on the Aptian in the Sítio Sobradinho section of the Araripe Basin, northeast Brazil. The analysed section represents a deepening-upward sequence with mid-ramp shoal and outer ramp to basin facies associations on a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate marine ramp. The analysed rocks are dominated by Early Cretaceous planktic foraminifera (Hedbergella aptiana, H. praelippa, H. sigali, Blesfucuiana cf. cumulus, Microhedbergella miniglobularis, Gorbachikella cf. kugleri, Pseudoguembelitria blakenosensis, Globigerinelloides clavatus, Globigerinelloides aff. aptiensis, Gubkinella sp. and Loeblichella sp.). Ostracoda fauna is composed mainly of Pattersoncypris crepata and Pattersoncypris micropapillosa. The occurrence of P. crepata associated with the Aptian planktic foraminifera demonstrates the potential of this ostracode species to date this interval. The planktic foraminifera from the upper Aptian (Microhedbergella miniglobularis Zone) of the Araripe Basin show characteristical Tethyan affinities.

The aim of paleontology is the understanding of the life history on Earth, its development and processes along the geologic time. Hence, it involves diversified fields, being the micropaleontology one of them, whose focus lies on taxonomy and appli-cations. The micropaleontology is, sometimes, poorly developed in an institution due to the scarcity of specialists. In order to fill this gap, a didactic collection was prepared to facilitate the divulgation of the micropaleontology in the university. Due to the necessity of increase in the knowledge on microfossils among graduate and undergraduate students, an extension project of mi-crofossils didactic collection was carried out at the Geology Department of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. For each fossil group (i.e. ostracods, foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils, charophytes, radiolarians, diatoms, conodonts, palyno-morphs, fish fragments, echinoid spines, sponge spicules and mollusks) micropaleontological slides were assembled. The origin of the material is varied, with specimens from several Brazilian sedimentary basins and even from other countries. The collections consist in numbered and identified slides, besides the material necessary for their manipulation, such as brushes and spare slides. In each fossil group, the specimens are organized according to the morphology, taxonomy and age. Each slide has instructions for classes inserted in a Guidebook of Micropaleontology thoroughly illustrated, with general characteristics of each fossil group and the respective methodology for sample preparation. The collection is intended to be used in practical classes, workshops and short-courses, with biological, petrographic and stereoscopic microscopes, for observation of the mor-phological structures, identification and solution of problems proposed in the guidebook. Besides the improvement in the pale-ontology teaching, these collections will also contribute to the qualification of the students as future professionals.

Paleocene ostracods and planktonic foraminifera from the Maria Farinha Formation, Paraíba Basin, are herein presented. Eleven ostracod species were identified in the genera Cytherella Jones, Cytherelloidea Alexander, Eocytheropteron Alexander, Semicytherura Wagner, Paracosta Siddiqui, Buntonia Howe, Soudanella Apostolescu, Leguminocythereis Howe and, probably, Pataviella Liebau. The planktonic foraminifera are represented by the genera Guembelitria Cushman, Parvularugoglobigerina Hofker, Woodringina Loeblich and Tappan, Heterohelix Ehrenberg, Zeauvigerina Finlay, Muricohedbergella Huber and Leckie, and Praemurica Olsson, Hemleben, Berggren and Liu. The ostracods and foraminifera analyzed indicate an inner shelf paleoenvironment for the studied section. Blooms of Guembelitria spp., which indicate either shallow environments or upwelling zones, were also recorded reinforcing previous paleoenvironmental interpretations based on other fossil groups for this basin.

No presente estudo, são apresentados os foraminíferos e ostracodes recuperados em uma amostragem da Formação Cotinguiba, Bacia de Sergipe-Alagoas. A microfauna de ostracodes é composta por uma abundância de Paracypris eniotmetos (Candonidae) e trachyleberidídeos (Sergipella? sp., Sapucariella multidifferentis e Sapucariella sp.), além dos táxons Cytherella gambiensis e Cytherelloidea sp. pertencentes a família Cytherellidae. A associação de foraminíferos bentônicos é composta por táxons aglutinantes com predomínio dos spiroplectamminídeos (Quasispiroplectammina cf. regoi e Quasispiroplectammina sp.), e táxons de carapaça calcária-hialina, representada por gavelinelídeos e turrinilídeos (gênero Praebulimina) que dominam a associação. A assembleia de foraminíferos planctônicos é caracterizada pela frequência de Planoheterohelix ex gr. globulosa e abundantes hedbergenilídeos, representado pelo gênero Whiteinella (Whiteinella baltica, Whiteinella cf. baltica, Whiteinella aff. archaeocretacea, Whiteinella ? sp.), além de Muricohedbergella cf. delrioensis, Muricohedbergella sp. Clavihedbergella simplex e Falsotruncana? sp. Com base nessa associação planctônica, bem como na ocorrência de Sapucariella multidifferentis, a amostra foi posicionada na transição Cenomaniano-Turoniano (94,03 m.a), dentro da Zona W. archaeocretacea. A associação identificada evidencia um domínio de táxons oportunistas de ambientes mesotróficos para eutróficos, tolerantes a variações nos níveis de oxigênio e importantes marcadores globais do OEA 2 (Cenomaniano-Turoniano).
