The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of phytoconstituents in the extracts of Convolvulus microphyllus, Acacia nilotica, Withania somnifera, Tribullus terrestris, and Citrullus colocynthis, and to test their anti-microbial activity against the most common strains causing bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI). The dried powdered plant parts were extracted using five different solvents in a Soxhlet apparatus for 48 h at a temperature ranging from 60 to 80°C. These extracts were used for preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial analyses. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with a scan range of 450 to 4000/cm and 4/cm resolution and GC-MS analysis were carried out to analyse the samples for the presence of phytochemicals having antimicrobial activity. The methanolic extract of Tribulus terrestris was found to have the most promising antibacterial properties. The results revealed that the methanolic extract of Tribullus terrestris displayed significant antimicrobial activity against the uropathogens, especially against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Phytochemicals like steroids, glycosides and alkaloids were found in the methanolic extracts of T. terrestris. FTIR analysis and GC-MS revealed the presence of 50 compounds. We conclude that the methanolic extract of T. terrestris fruit has more potent antimicrobial activity than other extracts and standard antibiotics used in this study. In the future, additional investigation will be required to isolate the active compound, undertake toxicological investigations, and start a clinical trial.

Background: To investigate the extracts of Commiphora wightii for the presence of phytoconstituents and screen anti-microbial activity against dominant UTI pathogens. GC-MS and FTIR are used for the identification of functional groups of the bioactive compounds. Methods: Five different solvents were screened for extraction of compounds from the powdered plant at temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 upto 72 hours. These extracts were used for preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial analyses. Functional groups were identified by using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer scanning from 450 to 4000 cm-1 and a 4 cm-1 resolution. The existence of the major compound with the most promising antimicrobial activities was discovered utilising GC-MS analysis. Result: The results revealed that the methanolic extract of Commiphora wightii displayed significant glycosides and flavonoids. Fifty-two functional compounds were identified using GC-MS and FTIR.

Aim: In a view to determining the capacity of Clerodendrum polycephalum to control mosquitoes, the methanol extract of the leaf was investigated for insecticidal activities using three species of mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus. Methodology: The leaves of C. polycephalum were collected, dried and extracted with methanol. Mosquito larvae were exposed to different concentrations for 24/48h. and sublethal concentrations (L25, 50, 75) of the extract to determine larvicidal activity and monitor growth and development respectively. Twenty (20) blood-fed female Aedes aegyti mosquitoes were allowed to lay eggs on treated filter papers for antioviposition bioassay. The crude extract was separated into N-hexane, Dichloromethane, ethyl-acetate, ethanol fractions using Vacuum Liquid Chromatography to determine the active fraction. Results: Results showed that larval mortalities were in the order C. quiquefasciatus>A. gambiae>A. aegypti with effective concentration ranging from 250 – 8000 ppm. Mortalities at 48hr were significantly different (p<0.05) from mortalities at 24h. Of the four fractions obtained, ethanol fraction gave the highest larval mortality of 100% at 2000 ppm. Larval duration for all the three species of mosquitoes exposed to the crude extract varied between 2.25±0.5 and 3.25±0.5 days. As Antioviposition Index increased from 46.4 - 89.9, percent hatching of mosquito eggs deceased from 87.25 – 67.5% with increasing concentration. Conclusion: The extract of C. polycephalum was found to contain insecticidal compounds which are soluble in polar solvent. The plant could be exploited in mosquito control programme.
