Physiological strain in the Hungarian mining industry: The impact of physical and psychological factors

Abstract: Objectives: The objectives of these investigations completed on workplaces in the Hungarian mining industry were to characterize the physiological strain of workers by means of work pulse and to examine the effects of work-related psychological factors. Material and Methods: Continuous heart rate (HR) recording was completed on 71 miners over a total of 794 shifts between 1987 and 1992 in mining plants of the Hungarian mining industry using a 6-channel recorder -Bioport (ZAK, Germany). The work processes were … Show more

“…The study targeted detailed factors such as presence of managers, temperature of mining site, illumination in mining site and so on, finding these might affect heart rate of miners, which indicates miners' strain. The results of the study indicate that those detailed factors also influence miners' strain, for example high temperature in mining sites gives miners more strain and brighter illumination gives miners less strain [10]. Regarding work environment related with wellbeing of employees, a study by Donatella Di Marco estimated that wellbeing of employees is decreased in discriminatory environment [11].…”

“…An interesting result among the researched male population of aviation industry employees proved to be the factor of community and meaningfulness of interpersonal relations in the workplace. Aspects related to creating efficiently functioning and coexisting teams prove to be significant in decreasing the sense of threat in the analyzed group [37] The presented research has some limitations that we want to address. First of all, there are some constraints mainly within our data set, which included a limited number of demographic variables.…”
