Physiological performance of cagaita seeds (Eugenia dysenterica DC.) Subjected to drying

Abstract: The present study aimed to determine the imbibition curve and evaluate the effects of 'reducing the water content of cagaita seeds (Eugenia dysenterica DC.), using the radiographic image analysis technique. To this end, three assays were carried out: seed imbibition curve and root protrusion were determined in assay 1. Seeds in silica gel were oven dried for to 72 h and were then analyzed for water content and vigor in assay 2. Seeds were dried up to certain levels of the water content and were evaluated by ra… Show more

“…Seeds of Eugenia species that have been studied and described in the literature up to now are intolerant to desiccation (Andrade et al, 2003;Maluf et al, 2003;Masetto et al, 2008;Delgado and Barbedo, 2012;Scalon et al, 2012;Calvi et al, 2017a;Silva et al 2017;Lamarca et al, 2020). Seeds intolerant to desiccation, popularly known as recalcitrant or intermediate seeds, unlike those tolerant to desiccation, called orthodox seeds, do not form a seed bank Mean values followed by the same letter (lowercase comparing periods, uppercase comparing water potentials) do not differ from each other by Tukey's test at 5%.…”

“…Já a secagem em estufa proporcionou um aumento da respiração nas primeiras horas de secagem, mas depois houve um decréscimo da respiração. Ainda neste estudo, as análises de germinação e vigor acompanharam a segunda resposta respiratória (Silva et al 2017).…”
