Physicochemical Properties of Two Generations of MTA-Based Root Canal Sealers

Abstract: This study evaluated the physicochemical properties and the effect of solubility on the surface morphology and composition of the root canal sealers MTA-Bioseal, MTA-Fillapex, and Adseal. Discs (n = 10) of freshly mixed sealer were prepared and then analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). The discs were immersed for 1, 7, 14, and 28 days in deionized water. The solubility %; pH change of the solution; and releas… Show more

“…While in another study by Altan H et al (2018) [ 49 ] at 24 h evaluation MTA Fillapex presented significantly less microleakage than Sealapex and AH Plus sealer but Sealapex and AH Plus presented significantly less microleakage than MTA Fillapex at long term interval of 180 days. The sealing ability of MTA Fillapex can be explained because of its composition as it contain salicylate resin and natural resin in its composition which increases the flow of the material to penetrate the dentinal tubules [ 40 , 42 , 50 ] and encourage apatite like crystalline deposits along the apical and middle third of root canal forming a interfacial layer with tag-like feature but the low adhesion capacity of these tag-like structures, result in the low bond strength of MTA Fillapex [ 51 , 52 ]. The low bond strength will result in lesser sealing ability and thereby explaining the result of this study.…”

“…The high flow value of group I and group III could be attributed to the high amount of resin content in group I and small particle size for both groups (7,(17)(18)(19) . Furthermore, the low flow of group II might be attributed to its composition, particle size and viscosity (9,20) .…”

“…Samples were prepared by using split metallic molds of 10mm diameter and 2mm height. Wet tissue was used to cover glass slap to provide moisture needed for setting (9) then the mold was placed over it. The sealers were applied into the molds according to the manufacturers' instructions for each group at room temperature.…”
