Physical growth curves of indigenous Xavante children in Central Brazil: results from a longitudinal study (2009–2012)

Abstract: Impaired Xavante growth before 1 year followed by inconsistent recovery before 10 years reflects health and wellbeing disparities with regard to the Brazilian national population and a complex epidemiology of growth involving rapid nutritional change.

“…Iron deficiency during pregnancy is generally associated with low birth weight and preterm birth. 23,28 In the case of the Xavante, the absence of a significant relation may be due to the fact that children tend to be born with adequate weight and only suffer growth deceleration in the third or fourth month of life 30 . However, mean hemoglobin levels in children showed a direct relationship with the mother's age, consistent with findings from other studies of non-Indigenous and Indigenous children 6,29 .…”

“…The recent history of the Xavante people is marked by rapid and profound changes in ecology, subsistence and dietary patterns, and physical activity 7,36 . These changes strongly affect children, especially those under 5 years of age, among whom almost 30% have linear growth deficits 21,30 . Diarrhea accounts for approximately 75% of hospitalizations caused by infections and parasitic diseases, which are responsible for 20% of all hospitalizations 19 .…”

“…In a study conducted by Ferreira et al [34], the birth weight and height of indigenous children in Brazil were similar to the average WHO reference standards. However, shortly after birth, a change in growth was observed in both parameters.…”

“…They are grouped by general subject such as growth and diet, health and disease and climate change. Some are review papers (Brond ızio et al, 2016;Dorea & Marques, 2016;Dufour et al, 2016) while others are research articles Ferreira et al, 2016;Marques et al, 2016;Silva et al, 2016;Urlacher et al, 2016;Vallinoto et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2016). The papers present perspectives about ecology, public policy and traditional populations and also discuss theoretical issues such as adaptation, impacts of modernisation/westernisation on vulnerable populations and aspects of life history and health of different groups.…”

“…The papers present perspectives about ecology, public policy and traditional populations and also discuss theoretical issues such as adaptation, impacts of modernisation/westernisation on vulnerable populations and aspects of life history and health of different groups. Ferreira et al (2016) present an analysis of growth curves of Xavante children <10 yrs of age living in central Brazil. They noted that Xavante are one of the larger indigenous groups in Brazil; they have experienced rapid economic and environmental change in recent decades and are now dependent on market resources for dietary and other needs.…”
