Physical Exercise in Patients with Severe Kidney Disease

Abstract: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those on long-term dialysis, often suffer from muscle wasting and excessive fatigue. It is known that inactivity, muscle wasting and reduced physical functioning are associated with increased mortality in CKD. Known causes include uraemic myopathy and neuropathy, inactivity, and anaemia. Exercise in patients receiving regular dialysis treatment for end-stage renal disease was first introduced 3 decades ago, but is still only offered in a minority … Show more

“…Additionally decreased number of patients and drop out of those participating in the exercise program. [16,17] An exercise protocol could lead to improvements in many functions, such as blood pressure, heart function (especially ventricular function in hemodialysis [HD] patients), muscle strength, and respiratory capacity, and reduce muscle atrophy, with excellent results for the QOL. [17] Therefore there is an urgent need to treat fatigue so as to decrease its impact on the life of patient undergoing hemodialysis.…”

“…It is well documented that CKD patients have poor physical functioning (reduced ability to perform everyday activities), low exercise capacity, and significant muscle wasting -a field that has recently been reviewed 1 . These problems arise from a number of factors 1 including inactivity, inflammation, anaemia, reduced muscle function and increased muscle protein catabolism 2 .…”
