Physical Activity, Well‐Being, and the Basic Psychological Needs: Adopting the SDT Model of Eudaimonia in a Post‐Cardiac Rehabilitation Sample

Abstract: This study showed a potential bidirectional relationship between MVPA and EWB and tested the SDT model of eudaimonia with MVPA in post-cardiac rehabilitation. Future interventions could look to simultaneously promote eudaimonia and MVPA among this population.

“…While SDT is macro-theoretical approach, related to large-scale issues and large groups of people (Saunders et al, 2018), our study examined needs from the very specific perspective of (a) how a family member living with a high-risk patient acted in regard to CPR training, (b) why he or she acted as observed, and (c) how he or she interpreted the meanings of his or her action at the micro-level.…”

“…One sub-theory of SDT is the basic psychological needs theory, which postulates that humans have three basic psychological needs: the innate needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness . Support for basic psychological needs has been reported to produce autonomous motivation of health behavioural change such as physical activity (Pedersen, Halvari, & Olafsen, 2018), which includes postcardiac rehabilitation programs (Saunders, Huta, & Sweet, 2018).…”

“…In addition, it is important to investigate cancer survivors' well-being orientations (hedonia: seeking enjoyment, comfort, and pleasure, and eudaimonia: seeking excellence and develop the best within ones), results from health programs. 6 In this pilot study, therefore, based on self-determination theory (SDT) approach, 7 we aimed to examine an autonomysupportive exercise instructing style (e.g., provide choice, and take individual's perspectives) to enhance hedonic and eudaimonic orientations, exercise motivation, and psychological well-being in breast cancer survivors.…”

“…26,27 Apart from the importance of examining exercise motivation and psychological well-being, research has shown that well-being orientations (hedonia and eudaimonia) in health care programs associate with patients' well-being. 6 The hedonic approach reflects the view that well-being consists of maximizing subjective happiness and experience of pleasure so that to maximize hedonic well-being orientation, people should do what makes them happy and minimizing negative emotions. In contrast, the eudaimonic approach reflects optimal psychological functioning at one's highest potential.…”

“…A well-being perspective from the self-determination theory may explain the unique associations between physical activity and PPWB (Saunders, Huta, & Sweet, 2018). This perspective suggests that well-being facilitates health behaviour performance by increasing positive experiences that lead to the intrinsic pursuit of life goals (Ryan, Huta, & Deci, 2008).…”
