Background:Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is currently a cause of mortality in some parts of the world. The ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter (ABCA1) gene prepares instructions to produce the ATP-binding cassette transporter protein whose operation is for export of phospholipids and cholesterol, outside cells where they are limited to Apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1). Increased ABCA1 activity could inhibit atherosclerosis.Objectives:In the present study, the effect of aerobic exercise was investigated on gene expression and biochemical parameters.Patients and Methods:The participants included 36 inactive women, which were randomly assigned to control (CON) and experimental (EX) groups. The EX group performed 12 weeks of aerobic exercise and the CON group remained inactive. Fasting blood samples were collected 24 hours before the first session and 48 hours after completion of the course. The ABCA1 and APOA1 gene expressions were measured using semi-quantitative-RT-PCR. Data were analyzed by the SPSS software (version 18).Results:A significant increase in blood ABCA1 (EX group P < 0.002, t = - 9.876) and Apo A-I (EX group P < 0.05, t = 2.76) gene expression was shown following the 12 weeks of training. Plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration increased (P < 0.001, t = 4.90 respectively) while plasma low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration decreased (P < 0.001, t = 4.27) in the EX group compared with the CON group.Conclusions:Aerobic exercises can increase ABCA1 and APO-A1 gene expression. Induction of these genes can effectively prevent cardiovascular disease.
Background: Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), this pilot study aimed to test an autonomy-supportive exercise instructing style to promote hedonic (seeking comfort and pleasure) and eudaimonic (seeking to develop the best within one and pursue excellence)orientations, exercise motivation, and psychological well-being of breast cancer survivors. Methods: Twenty-four breast cancer survivors were randomized in either autonomy-supportive exercise instructing style (treatment condition) or usual exercise instructing style (control condition). The study consisted of a pre-intervention session followed by 22 exercise sessions and a post-intervention session. Hedonic and eudaimonic orientations, exercise motivation, and psychological well-being (subjective vitality) measured at baseline and post-intervention sessions. Results: As expected, participants in the treatment condition reported greater eudaimonic and hedonic orientations and subjective vitality compared to the participants in the control condition. The results showed no difference in exercise motivation across conditions. Conclusion: We concluded that the SDT-based intervention was successful in helping breast cancer survivors increase hedonic and eudaimonic orientations and subjective vitality. Practical and theoretical implications, along with limitations and future research suggestions are discussed inside.
Physical activity is considered a healthy behavior as lifestyle component that can prevent chronic disease and attributed to numerous psychological and physical benefits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise dependence and narcissism components on eating disorders in male bodybuilders. The study was a correlational study and the statistical population consisted of male bodybuilders in city clubs with more than one year of continuous training of at least three sessions a week. 250 male bodybuilders were selected by cluster sampling. The research tool consisted of three questionnaires: narcissistic personality, exercise dependency and eating disorders. For data analysis correlation and regression tests were performed by SPSS version 21 and p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant.The results showed that addiction to exercise and narcissism and their components had a significant positive relationship with eating disorders (all P-values < 0.01). Regression models revealed that exercise dependence and narcissism were able to predict 46% of variance in eating disorder (p < 0.01). According to the data, nutritional behaviors can be promoted by improving narcissistic tendencies and dependency on exercise.
Background and Objectives: One of the most important factors in mental health is cultivating happiness and reducing anxiety in students. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 12 weeks of aerobic exercise on anxiety and happiness of female high school students. Material and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study and was performed as a pretest-posttest with a control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all female high school students in Urmia city of Iran, of whom 40 vulentiarly agreed to participate in the study and were randomly divided into two groups of 20 experimental and control. For the experimental group, aerobic exercises were performed for 12 weeks, three sessions per week and and each session takes 45 to 60 minutes. The Oxford Happiness and Spielberger Anxiety Questionnaire were used in this study. Data analysis was performed by analysis of covariance using spss22 software. Results: The results showed a significant effect of aerobic exercise on promoting happiness variables and reducing anxiety in students (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Aerobic exercise improves students' cognitive functions, so using this approach has been recommended in order to promote students' mental health.
