Phylogeny and classification of armored scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae)

Abstract: Armored scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae) are major economic pests and are among the world's most invasive species. Here we describe a system of specimen and identification management that establishes a basis for well-vouchered molecular identification. We also present an expanded Bayesian phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated fragments of 4 genetic loci: the large ribosomal subunit (28S), elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1α), cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI‒II), and the small ribosomal s… Show more

“…Specimens were preserved in 100% ethanol and stored at -20 °C before being slidemounted. Specimens were slide-mounted according to the joint DNA-morphology preparation protocol described in Normark et al (2019), except that some specimens were prepared according to an earlier set of protocols. In the earlier protocols some specimens were ground to powder for DNA preparation and others from the same series were transferred directly to 10% KOH for mounting on microscope slides.…”

“…Informal synonyms. A specimen from the type series (D0274B) has appeared in published molecular-phylogenetic analyses, designated as "Clavaspis undescr" (Schneider et al 2018) and "Clavaspis ud0274" (Normark et al 2019).…”

“…From Miller and Davidson's (1990) list, pests belonging to Diaspidini account for 23% (46) of those listed, Lepidosaphidini account for 18% (35), and Parlatoriini for 7% (13). Tribal classifications follow the current, phylogenetically informed framework proposed by Normark et al (2019).…”
