Origanum (Lamiaceae) comprises a number of essential oil‐rich species that have been used by humans for centuries. Today, the four species of section Majorana (O. onites, O. dubium, O. majorana and O. syriacum) are amongst the most widely used. Despite the importance of this section, phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries amongst its four taxa are unclear. In the present investigation, we used DNA sequence data from two nuclear regions [internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 1‐deoxy‐d‐xylulose 5‐phosphate synthase (DXS)] as well as five microsatellite loci to test the taxonomic status of the four species of section Majorana. The combined DNA data revealed O. onites and O. syriacum as the older species in the section. Origanum majorana descends directly from O. syriacum. Origanum dubium was found to be of hybridogenous origin showing attributes of O. onites, O. syriacum and a third, unknown, Origanum species. Both sequence and microsatellite analyses provided evidence for recent hybridization between O. onites and O. dubium in Turkey. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London,

The role of environment and the relative significance of endogenous versus exogenous selection in shaping hybrid zones have been crucial issues in the studies of hybridization. Recent advances in ecological niche modeling (ENM) offer new methodological tools, especially in combination with the genotyping of individuals in the hybrid zone. Here, we study the hybrid zone between the widely known spices Origanum onites and Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum in Crete. We analyze the genetic structure of both parental taxa and their hybrid Origanum × intercendens using AFLP markers on 15 sympatric and 12 allopatric populations and employ ecological niche modeling and niche similarity tests to study their niche patterns. We complement these analyses with seed viability measurements. Our study revealed that the hybridizing taxa O. onites and O. vulgare ssp. hirtum and the resulting genotypic classes showed geographical and environmental niche similarities based on the predictions of ENMs and the subsequent similarity tests. The occurrence of the hybrid zone is not directly dependent on environmental factors which favor the fitness of the hybrid compared to the parental taxa, but rather on aspects such as historical factors and management practices, which may contribute to the localization and maintenance of the contact zone between parental species. Our results suggest that if a minimum required niche differentiation between genotypic classes is not achieved, environmental dependence might not have a prominent role on the outcome of the hybridization.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of extract of basil and oregano, and its synergistic effect when added to soybean oil and subjected to accelerated storage test. Extracts of basil, oregano and mixtures of both were applied to soybean oil at a concentration of 2.000 mg/kg, then the extracts were heated in an oven at 60C for a period of 10 days. Samples were taken every 2 days and analyzed for concentrations of peroxides and conjugated dienes. Synthetic antioxidant tert‐butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) at a concentration of 50 mg/kg and soybean oil free antioxidant (control) subject to the same conditions were used as benchmarks. The results showed that the antioxidant effect decreases according to oil heating for all treatments. However, the synthetic antioxidant showed superior protection to the soybean oil during the formation of primary oxidation compounds, followed by the natural extracts, which showed no synergism. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS This study can encourage the discovery of new sources of natural antioxidants with significant contribution in the field of health worldwide. It aims at finding effective and less toxic substances to be used in food by evaluating the antioxidant potential of basil and oregano when applied individually or in mixture forms with soybean oil and compared with the synthetic antioxidant TBHQ, currently employed in food industries and target of safety concerns.
