Photodynamic therapy in oral lichen planus: A prospective case-controlled pilot study

Abstract: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common, chronic relapsing inflammatory disorder of the mucous membranes, which causes major discomfort. Current treatment includes topical/systemic glucocorticoids, immune modulators and systemic immunosuppressants, which may lead to considerable side-effects. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and immunological efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in OLP as an alternative, easy-to-use, safe and non-invasive treatment. Twenty patients with OLP were treated with … Show more

“…We decided to use Thongprasom's score for the clinical assessment, as it has been frequently used in OLP studies (Arduino et al, 2018;Carbone et al, 1999;Conrotto et al, 2006;Cosgarea et al, 2020;Thongprasom et al, 1992) et al, 2005).…”

“…Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the effect and underlying mechanism of 5-ALA-mediated photodynamic therapy on OSCC in vitro. Photodynamic therapy is a new approach for targeted treatment of cancer, which is ideally suited for solid cancer, benign tumors and some precancerous lesions [11][12][13]. In clinical treatment, the recommended dose of photosensitizer has no cytotoxicity, but photoactivation with the participation of oxygen can induce cytotoxicity.…”

“…3 In addition, PDT could induce antiinflammatory effects on OLP by decreasing the relative number of IL-17-secreting T cells, CD4 + cells, CD8 + T cells, and CXCL10 plasma levels. 4 Above all, we firstly tried PDT to treat OLP patient with moderate-to-severe dysplasia and obtained satisfied efforts, the condition remained stable after following 1 year. Therefore, PDT can be considered as an alternative treatment for the management of OLP presenting with epithelial dysplasia.…”

“…However, PDT had excellent preservation of organism integrity without scar formation 3 . In addition, PDT could induce anti‐inflammatory effects on OLP by decreasing the relative number of IL‐17‐secreting T cells, CD4 + cells, CD8 + T cells, and CXCL10 plasma levels 4 …”
