Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Photothermal Therapy with Tumor-Targeting HA-FeOOH@PPy Nanorods

Abstract: Cancer theragnosis agents with both cancer diagnosis and therapy abilities would be the next generation of cancer treatment. Recently, nanomaterials with strong absorption in near-infrared (NIR) region have been explored as promising cancer theragnosis agents for bio-imaging and photothermal therapy (PTT). Herein, we reported the synthesis and application of a novel multifunctional theranostic nanoagent based on hyaluronan (HA)-coated FeOOH@polypyrrole (FeOOH@PPy) nanorods (HA-FeOOH@PPy NRs) for photoacoustic … Show more

“…Repartition of the fluorescence was also impacted by the ratio of stromal cells. The representative line profile plot of the fluorescence at different times (30,60,90, and 110 min) indicated a variation of fluorescence repartition inside the spheres. For Panc-1 and Panc-1/PSC ratio 5-1, the fluorescence increased uniformly in all the spheres as a function of time, but for ratios 1-1 and 1-2, the fluorescence was delayed and remained localized mainly within the outer layers of the spheroids (Fig.…”

“…Nanoparticles can have specific light interaction characteristics, making them suitable for multimodal detection, such as Raman spectroscopy [27][28][29] , photoacoustic analysis 30 , magnetic resonance imaging 31 , two-photon microscopy 32 , or even a combination of these methods 33 , in 2D, 3D and in-vivo models 34 . However, few of these techniques have been applied in 3D cancer models (spheroids or phantoms) 35 .…”

“…PAI is also utilized as a powerful tool for a wide range of image-guided applications. For minimally invasive biopsy of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), a handheld array probe-based PAI system has demonstrated its performance of visualizing the ability of needle insertion and guiding to SLNs dyed methylene blue (MB) and indocyanine green (ICG) [ 38 , 39 ]. A similar clinical PAI system has been successfully developed to detect the catheter with higher sensitivity than USI [ 40 ].…”

“…Conjugating of Au NPs to porphyrins with the addition of light irradiation has proved to address the challenges of Au as PTT agents [52]. Improved antitumor efficacy in PTT has thus been reported with some studies reporting dual-modality (photodynamic and photo-thermal therapy) with hyaluronan-coated FeOOH@polypyrrole nanorods [53] and albumin/sulfonamide stabilized iron porphyrin metal organic framework nanocomposites [54].…”
